They've built a reputation for innovation and today are a market leader in flexible barriers that increase shelf life and reduce food wastage with environmentally friendly, recyclable and compostable solutions. More important than the consistent year on year growth, the business has an exceptional culture & leadership team and have recently been acquired by another major player who will be further investing in capability as well as M&A to expand the footprint nationally whilst allowing the business to run independently and autonomously to maintain the family style culture.

The Business

The business has a new, state of the art R&D laboratory and lives and breathes its commitment to sustainability, seen not only in their packaging solutions but also in how they operate with brand new facilties in Melbourne that were built with sustainable materials, have won recognition for their installed solar on the new warehouse and invested in an electric fleet - just to name a few. The business is now looking for a General Manager to lead the next phase of growth.

The Role

With full P&L responsibility for a $45M+ business, the role will lead a dedicated and collaborative leadership team with deep technical expertise, a passion for innovation and a laser focus on customer satisfaction and quality outcomes. Their customer base is primarily focused on dairy, cheese, small goods, and red meat packaging. Key customers are in yogurt, coffee, and packaged meals and the role will be tasked with leading organic growth by expanding into new flexible packaging sectors (e.g. pet food), geographical expansion (Queensland, New South Wales) and strategic acquisitions. Potential for future local manufacturing (digital printing) is also on the agenda. Role responsibilities include:

• Identifying and evaluating potential acquisition targets to expand market reach and capabilities.
• Developing and executing strategies to penetrate new market segments within flexible packaging.
• Leveraging market knowledge to identify and capitalize on emerging trends and customer needs.
• Operational Management:
  • Overseeing the existing operations, ensuring efficiency and maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Managing the supply chain, optimizing sourcing strategies, and maintaining strong supplier relationships.
  • Monitoring financial performance, managing the P&L, and ensuring profitability.
• Team Leadership & Culture:
  • Maintaining a positive and collaborative culture, fostering a sense of ownership among the team.
  • Empowering and developing the existing senior management team (Operations Manager, Sales Managers)
  • Collaborating with and supporting the senior management team.
• Business & Market Development:
  • Identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, expanding the customer base.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with key customers.
  • Working with the sales team to drive revenue growth and achieve sales targets.
• Integration (Acquisitions):
  • Leading the integration of acquired businesses, ensuring a smooth transition and maximizing synergies.
  • Helping identification of potential M&A opportunities

The Person

Essential to be considered is prior or current experience in flexible packaging (and the technical understaning of the materials & benefits). Apart from that, as a General Manager leading sustainable growth, we're looking for a values based leader who's inclusive, demonstrates a high level of self-awareness, is collaborative and supportive with a passion for building cohesive, high performance cultures. The rest of the brief entails all of the harder skills required to lead a business as follows:

• Minimum 5-7 years of experience in the flexible packaging industry is critical.
• Experience in a National Sales Manager or GM role (even without full P&L responsibility) is highly desirable.
• Exposure to M&A activities (ideally identifying targets) is a plus, but not essential.
• Skills:
  • Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of flexible packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and industry standards. Ability to engage in technical discussions with the team and customers.
  • Commercial Acumen: Strong sales and business development skills, with a proven track record of driving revenue growth.
  • Leadership & People Management: Ability to lead, motivate, and empower a team, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to analyse market trends, identify opportunities, and develop effective growth strategies.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
• Personal Attributes:
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for driving growth and innovation.
  • Strong cultural fit with family-oriented values.
  • Ability to operate independently and take ownership of the business.
  • Hands-on approach and willingness to be involved in all aspects of the business.
