As a staff member in our Junior School, you will play an active role in supporting the development of our young men. Each boy is supported by his classmates, classroom teachers, Year Level Coordinator, specialist teachers and the school counsellor, who work together to ensure each boy finds his place in our school. Every student also belongs to a House and throughout the year is involved in a range of competitions – athletics, cross-country, swimming, poetry, maths, spelling, trivia and music. At BGS, you will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of school life.

The Role

All of our students participate in our compulsory music program from ELC through to Year 8, with the option for boys to continue with their music as an elective in their senior years. Our students are provided the opportunity to participate in ensembles/choirs and our instrumental program is very active. As a result we also have a full calendar of local and interstate performances. We are currently seeking an innovative and passionate Classroom Music Teacher to join our Junior School team in January 2026. The primary focus of this part time (0.44FTE) position is to teach classroom music to students in our Junior School. The Classroom Music Teacher is also involved in a number of music related performances within the Junior School, such as Christmas pageants, ensembles and the annual musical, across the year. Note: given the nature of the music program, the successful applicant will need to work on Wednesdays, Thursdays and one other day per week.

Responsibilities
  • Teach classroom music to students in the Junior School (0.44 FTE).
  • Contribute to music related performances within the Junior School (e.g., Christmas pageants, ensembles, annual musical).
  • Engage in the school's instrumental program and ensembles/choirs.
  • Support publicity and organisation of local and interstate performances.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in primary music education.
  • Experience in Kodaly and Orff methodologies.
  • Experience with a band or string instrument and relevant ensemble direction.
  • Well developed choral direction and vocal skills.
  • A strong understanding of the principles of the science of learning.
  • Experience in delivering a knowledge based curriculum that encourages and supports innovation amongst the students.
  • Experience using evidence-informed teaching strategies based on the work of prominent educational researchers including Barak Rosenshine, Doug Lemov, John Hattie and Jim Knight.
  • A demonstrated ability to enthuse, motivate and encourage boys to take part in various Junior School Music ensembles.
  • Experience playing the piano and accompaniment skills is desirable.
  • Current VIT registration and National Criminal Record Check.
