As the Principal Finance Officer, you will report to the Finance Manager and play a pivotal role in delivering high-level financial strategy, compliance, and policy development. You will also lead a small team, guide cross-functional projects, and provide critical insights for senior stakeholders and executive management.

Your Contribution (Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities)

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and coordinate the department's strategic financial planning, budget development, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Oversee end-of-month and end-of-year processes, including complex reconciliations, accruals, and preparation of financial statements in compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Provide authoritative advice to senior executives on financial risk, compliance, procurement, and cost-control strategies.
  • Drive continuous improvement of financial systems, policies, and business processes to enhance accuracy, transparency, and accountability.
  • Monitor financial performance against budget, highlighting variances and leading corrective action in collaboration with operational teams.
  • Ensure integrity and accuracy of financial data through effective oversight of internal controls, audit preparation, and governance activities.
  • Lead a team of finance officers, providing coaching, mentoring, and professional development to build capability and performance.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including auditors and Treasury, to ensure consistent financial stewardship and reporting alignment.
  • Represent the finance function in department-wide initiatives and working groups, influencing policy decisions and reform agendas.

The Ideal Candidate (Key Capabilities)

To excel in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven experience in senior-level financial leadership roles within the public sector or similarly complex environments.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting frameworks, public sector finance regulations, and Queensland Government financial reporting standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic financial planning, analysis, and risk management.
  • Ability to lead teams through change, foster a high-performance culture, and drive innovation in financial operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement and service excellence.

Qualifications

A degree in accounting, finance, business, or commerce is essential. CPA or CA qualifications are highly desirable and will be viewed favourably.
