Wellington, Australia Public Defence Service - New Zealand Full time
Te Haeata/The Opportunity

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Director to lead Anti-Money Laundering policy for a fixed term period to July 2027. This is a newly established position in the Ministry of Justice's Policy Group, designed to bring strategic oversight and leadership to two policy teams focused on delivering our AML/CFT work programme.

The Ministry of Justice plays a leading role in the AML/CFT system, including administering the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Act 2009. We are responsible for delivering legislative changes, monitoring the system, leading cross-system co-ordination, governance and stewardship, and leading New Zealand's international engagement.

This is an exciting time to contribute to our AML work - New Zealand's approach to AML is undergoing significant system-level change. Our programme of work is significant in scale, complex, and fast-paced. The Ministry is overseeing substantial regulatory change and has a leadership role in the development and delivery of a National Strategy for AML and a supporting action plan. At the same time, we are preparing for our next Financial Action Taskforce country evaluation.

The Director will maintain oversight of the delivery of the breadth of the work programme, and play a key role in managing relationships with a range of government and industry stakeholders, as well as our international counterparts. International travel will be required from time to time.

The AML policy functions sit within the Criminal Justice Unit, in the Ministry's Policy Group. Successful candidates are appointed to the Policy Group.
