Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for the positions of Presiding Member and Deputy Presiding Member of the City of Cockburn Audit Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC).

About The Role

The role of the ARIC is to provide guidance and advice to the Council in relation to:

  • Risk management and internal controls accountability.
  • Reviewing external and internal audits.
  • Audit recommendations and implementation of audit findings.
  • Financial management reporting and accountability.
  • Compliance with laws, regulations, standards and governance.

The City of Cockburn ARIC comprises 6 Elected Members and 2 independent external members.

Role Requirements

The ARIC meets once a quarter at the City of Cockburn Administration Centre in Spearwood, typically on a Tuesday evening, with each meeting running for approximately two hours.

Appointments will be for a term of 2 years, commencing from a date to be nominated in October/November 2025 following the Western Australian local government elections on 18 October 2025.

ARIC independent external members must attend meetings in person and ensure they have capacity to adequately consider the agenda papers prior to each meeting. A $415 meeting attendance fee is currently paid to ARIC independent members. Other expenses may also be reimbursed, in accordance with the Local Government Act 1995 and latest Salaries and Allowances Tribunal determination.

Preferred Skill And Experience

The successful candidates will contribute to good governance and operational excellence in the City of Cockburn. They will bring an analytical mind with a collaborative approach to help the Council, the CEO and executive leadership team continuously improve. Ideally, they also bring knowledge and experience in:
  • Public sector management, preferably in a local government setting.
  • Strategic and operational risk management system and procedures.
  • Financial management including budgeting, systems and procedures.
  • Local government business controls including understanding internal and external audit of those controls.
  • Local government legislative and governance controls including those related to fraud and corruption.
  • Information technology systems including business transformations.
  • Local government operations such as public asset management strategy.
