Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Queensland Government Full time

Bring legacy to life. For the future of Queensland and the world. #DPIcareers. Join us and be a part of our ongoing prevention and response to biosecurity threats. Work as part of a team to prepare evidence-based pest risk assessments that will be used to prioritise invasive and potentially invasive animal and plant species.

Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government's efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats. Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.

Invasive Plants and Animals (IPA) significantly affect the environment, agricultural production, infrastructure, human health and our way of life in general. The IPA program directs, facilitates and delivers strategic and targeted action to reduce the impact of invasive species in Queensland.

As Our Scientist (Risk Assessment) You Will
  • Work as part of a team to prepare evidence-based pest risk assessments that will be used to prioritise invasive and potentially invasive animal and plant species; including species not yet established in Queensland, species in an early stage of invasion in Queensland and species that are already well-established.
You will know you're achieving success in the role when you:
  • Document pest risk assessment procedures and develop/refine decision-support tools that will be used to periodically review and up-date lists of prohibited and restricted biosecurity matter under the Biosecurity Act 2014.
  • Promote and improve awareness of the process used to select top-priority species for regulatory and operational responses.
  • Maintain a library of scientific assessments which support operational delivery and policy development.
  • Contribute to the development of surveillance plans, eradication feasibility assessments and species-specific control plans.
  • Maintain and acquire knowledge of contemporary methods for managing invasive species to develop and revise procedures, policies and practices, as required.

It is a requirement for all Biosecurity Queensland positions to have a criminal history check completed.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
