Assistant Dockmaster/Docking Leadhand

Wage Rate: Dependent on relevant experience

Hours of Work: 40 hours/week

Point Hope Maritime (a Ralmax Group Company) has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time Assistant Dockmaster in Victoria, British Columbia.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Dockmaster in leading a team to complete preparation for and the drydocking of multiple different types of vessels.
  2. Execute block builds to exacting standards.
  3. Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances.
  4. Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
  5. Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively.
  6. Safely operate power tools such as angle grinders, band saws, radial arm saw, table saw, circular saw, nail gun, etc.
  7. Other duties within scope of the position, as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  1. Experience in building block settings for drydocking.
  2. Ability to read, interpret and execute docking plans.
  3. Understand and interpret basic docking calculations.
  4. Understand basic hydrodynamics.
  5. Experience reading and interpreting draft marks and tide tables.
  6. Carpentry or other wood trade experience considered an asset.
  7. Welding and fabrication experience considered an asset.
  8. Willingness to participate in regular training programs and courses.
  9. Applicants with Drydock Training provided by DM Consulting will be considered priority over other candidates.

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. A successful candidate will show exceptional leadership skills, including interpersonal relationship and professional communication skills with clients and coworkers.
  2. Knowledge and proficiency in trade specific terminology (e.g. port/starboard, stern/bow, list, trim, drydock, quay, graving dock, marine railway).
  3. Understanding of how drydocking operations work.
  4. Candidates will show great attention to detail.
  5. Be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  6. Be available for overtime, split shifts, and shifts that may follow tidal patterns.
  7. Be able to maintain tight deadlines.
  8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  9. Ability to commit to and meet deadlines.
  10. Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing business needs.
  11. Mature, professional and optimistic attitude.
  12. Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
  13. Understand how to measure and interpret drawing in both standards of measurements (imperial & metric).
  14. Ability to communicate, read, and understand/follow directions in English.
  15. Level 1 Rigging certificate is considered an asset.

Requirements:

  1. Candidates must have a forklift certificate, or related experience.
  2. Hold a minimum of a Canadian Pleasure Craft License (PCL).
  3. Must be able to stand, crouch, kneel and/or sit for extended periods of time, able to lift up to 75 lbs, climb ladders and work from elevation, and walk on varied terrain.
  4. Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  5. Ability to work within confined spaces.
  6. Possess manual dexterity.
  7. Possess coordination.
  8. Proficiency in tying knots.
  9. Basic understanding of vessel mooring.

Work Conditions:

  1. Travel to off-site locations may be required.
  2. Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, etc.
  3. Overtime as required.
  4. Hazards associated with the trade.
  5. Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
