Defence Digital Group (DDG) is responsible for shaping, delivering, and maintaining an integrated and scalable ICT environment, the Single Information Environment (SIE), to enable Defence to fight and win in the digital age. The DDG Engineering Branch provides and applies technological principles to create, manage, and sustain digital systems and infrastructure within a scaled agile framework (SAFe). Our goal is to reduce complexity and costs, eliminate legacy systems to improve efficiency, and increase agility.

We are seeking a highly experienced and technical Network Engineer who will report to the Director of Network Engineering. The successful candidate will lead the planning, design, and implementation of solutions related to Defence's networks, adhering to best practices for architecture, security, and performance. This role is vital for the design, security, and ongoing enhancement of our network platforms across hybrid cloud, data centre, and on-premises environments. The Department plans to create merit pools to fill vacancies over the next 18 months.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known as the Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP), which provides a premium salary supplement for critical occupational disciplines/classifications in Defence. For more details, please contact the designated contact officer.

About The Team

You will join a team of ICT professionals delivering complex projects across key digital domains within both the Military and Enterprise Systems Divisions of Defence Digital Group (DDG). These roles will offer technical expertise, mentorship, and coaching within a matrixed environment, with team members embedded into projects as needed.

As a Digital Engineer in DDG, you may:
  • Lead a team of ICT professionals experienced in key technology platforms or products, or
  • Work independently on projects as the technical engineering SME.

Our Ideal Candidate

As the Network Engineer, you will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience designing and enhancing secure enterprise network and communication platforms, including WAN, LAN, SD-WAN, VPN, wireless, encryption, cross-domain solutions, and hybrid cloud connectivity.
  • Strong knowledge of secure network engineering practices relevant to Defence or National Security environments, with technical leadership in network architecture, performance, and security.
  • High proficiency in network routing/switching protocols, firewalls, and security platforms.
  • A Security by Design approach—integrating a robust security-first mindset to safeguard Defence's networks, systems, and data, ensuring compliance with Defence and Government standards.
  • Experience in cloud networking designs such as VPC, subnets, route tables, Transit Gateway, Route 53, Direct Connect, DNS, VNet, and ExpressRoute.
  • Excellent documentation skills, including technical documentation, solution design artifacts, baseline configurations, SOPs, training materials, and governance frameworks.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with security, application, data, and infrastructure engineering teams to deliver integrated platform capabilities.
