The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at state and national levels.
Our primary role is to be the 'health voice' for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.
AHCSA delivers nationally accredited training and has been registered with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) since 2004 (RTO 40142). AHCSA prides itself on providing a comfortable learning environment reflective of the organisation's cultural values and connections.
Broad Purpose of the Role
** Please note, this position is an identified role whereby the incumbent identifies as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent pursuant to the exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (SA).
The Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) position is a 0.5 Part-Time 2 year fixed position.
The Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) Educator is responsible for the delivery of culturally safe, appropriate, accessible, high quality accredited education programs that support and promote positive experiences and improved outcomes across pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenting for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
The role designs and facilitates comprehensive antenatal, birthing, and postnatal care education for trainees undertaking the AMIC specialisation training program through AHCSA's RTO, to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills to provide culturally responsive maternal and infant care in community and clinical settings.
Key responsibilities of the role include curriculum development, course delivery, assessment management, quality assurance, student engagement, and AMIC training program administration. It has a strong focus on enhancing the experience of students and maintaining a positive, supportive and culturally responsive learning environment.
The role fosters strong relationships with stakeholders, including Member Services and local communities, to ensure the education and training aligns with their needs. It provides support to Member Services for the recruitment of AMIC trainees, and coordinates activities to support trainee learning and continuing professional development for AMIC practitioners.
The role plays a pivotal role in helping build a well-qualified and skilled Aboriginal health workforce, supporting Member Services to strengthen the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector, and contributing to improving the capacity of mainstream health services to effectively address the health needs of Aboriginal communities.
The AMIC Educator is accountable to and reports to the Manager, Registered Training Organisation, and works in close collaboration with all members of the RTO team, AHCSA staff, Member Services and key stakeholders.

- Experience in clinical midwifery education and training, including teaching maternal and infant care to Aboriginal students.
- Experience in delivering adult education to Aboriginal individuals and groups, applying adult learning principles to educational delivery and assessing and providing feedback to students.
- Experience in using active learning methodologies, such as simulation, case-based learning, role-playing, and practical demonstrations to engage students.
- Experience in instructional design and developing curriculum and assessment in the field of Aboriginal health and adapting educational materials (where required) to ensure that they are culturally appropriate, accessible and relevant to Aboriginal learners.
