OverviewThe School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE) has an opportunity for a Research Associate (Level A) or Senior Research Associate (Level B). The positions will be part of a team of academics, post-doctoral researchers and post-graduate research students, collaborating with industry partners and across UNSW faculties via UNSW's Collaboration on Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM). CEEM undertakes interdisciplinary research on improving the economic and environmental sustainability of the Australian National Electricity Market, and other electricity industries worldwide.

Responsibilities- Analyze energy systems data and model using tools such as Python, R, MATLAB or Excel to contribute to the energy transition of Consumer Energy Resources (CER).
- Handle and analyze large real-world CER datasets (e.g., rooftop PV, batteries, EVs).
- Query and manipulate large datasets from databases and platforms (AWS, SQL, Azure).
- Develop algorithms to analyze CER compliance with Australian standards (AS 4777.2020.2, CSIP-AUS, IEEE).
- Develop algorithms to analyze CER curtailment under standards and the Emergency Backstop Mechanism (EBM).
- Develop open-source tools for DNSPs and network operators to manage CER operations.
- Create data visualisations to understand CER value and emerging challenges with increasing CER penetration at distribution and system levels.
- Engage with industry partners via regular meetings, presentations and industry reports.
This position is offered as either Level A or Level B, with appointment level commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Salary and Conditions- Level A (Research Associate) salary AUD $113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation
- Level B (Senior Research Associate) salary AUD $127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% superannuation
- Full-time
- Fixed-term contract – Until December 2027
- Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

- Level A: A PhD or equivalent research experience; experience in technical and economic modelling of renewable generation or distributed energy resources; expertise in analysis and modelling using large energy-related data sets; demonstrated ability for independent research, collaboration, and communication with diverse stakeholders; track record of publications; experience or interest in developing open-source modelling tools; highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Level B: All Level A qualifications plus demonstrated excellence in research outcomes, leadership potential, open-source code maintenance, and ability to build networks for funding and industry projects.
