About The Team

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is a large division within the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR). The NMI supports DISR in meeting its objectives by being the national authority on measurement. We play a fundamental role underpinning the Australian economy by maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system, developing and maintaining national measurement standards, and delivering world-class measurement products and client services.

NMI's Legal Metrology Branch plays an important role in ensuring Australian consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services. The Legal Metrology Branch supports and regulates industry to provide trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services via administration of the National Measurement Act 1960 and subordinate regulations. The role will be within the Programs and Governance Section within the Legal Metrology Branch.

The opportunity

The Data Architect will support the Legal Metrology Branch to deliver a major IT enhancement project for DISR; the Trade Measurement Activity and Reporting System Phase 4 Enhancement Project (the project). The project will deliver critical enhancements to the Microsoft Dynamics Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and associated NMI Services Portal (NMISP) as part of NMI's broader digital strategy.

This is a 10-month non-ongoing position being filled specifically for this project. Extension or ongoing conversion may be considered upon completion of the project.

What's in it for you?

You will be the key team member working with the DISR Chief Information Officer Division (CIOD) and managers and users within the Legal Metrology and Physical Metrology Branches of the NMI. We're looking for candidates with strong analytical and communication skills who have a strong understanding of the data lifecycle. Ideally you will have knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with Dynamics 365 CRM applications with external portals. You will map current data holdings, inputs and dependencies impacted by the project and research and recommend options for improvement.

Our ideal candidate
  • Demonstrated experience as a Data Architect in Australian Public Service settings, preferably within agencies with regulatory compliance responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing and optimising data holdings to ensure effective execution of business operational and strategic responsibilities and goals.
  • A working understanding of, or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of data security controls required by DISR.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, including well developed negotiation and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
  • Build and sustain relationships; liaise with a range of stakeholders within and outside of the division.
  • Adhere to the Australian Public Service Values, NMI values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional way.
What you will do
  • In consultation with stakeholders, map existing data holdings, inputs and dependencies impacted by the project.
  • Investigate and recommend optimisation of the use of data holdings for the different streams of the project.
  • Design and implement data architecture and integration frameworks that enable best practice data lifecycle management and ensure compliance with relevant standards, policies and regulations.
  • Design and implement documentation to support renewed data processes.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to optimise existing reporting processes, including setting standards for data accuracy and quality.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of revised and renewed data processes, adapting the approach when new information is presented.
  • Apply critical thinking to the project, and guide end users to adopt a similar mindset.
  • Work collaboratively with other areas in the division, the department and across government to deliver outcomes and share knowledge.
  • Work collaboratively with other areas in the division, the department and across government to uplift and maintain data governance (policies, processes, access, compliance).
