Council of the City of Sydney, Australia DeteQt Full time

DeteQt Darlington, New South Wales, Australia

Embedded Software Engineer

DeteQt is an early stage funded startup with customer traction and global partnerships.

We are building a foundational team diverse in background, experience, and thought. Be part of our exciting journey to build the world's first commercial chip-based diamond magnetometer.

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Embedded Software Engineer to join our team specialising in quantum sensing technology, specifically in magnetometry utilizing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond and integrated CMOS chip manufacturing.

About Us

We have developed a solid-state quantum magnetometer that combines chip-scale manufacturability, high-sensitivity and low size/weight/power. The sensor exploits the quantum properties of synthetic diamond with an integrated CMOS control chip to measure magnetic field vectors, crucial for magnetic navigation, anomaly detection, subterranean imaging and medical diagnostics.

Position Overview

You will be responsible for designing, developing, characterising, and optimising embedded software and hardware for DeteQt's CMOS chip-based magnetometer.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with DeteQt's cross-disciplinary team, partners and stakeholders to develop, integrate, and characterise hardware and software systems solutions.
  2. Implement processing algorithms and communication protocols to enable real-time magnetic field sensing in the desired mode and towards a set of desired specifications.
  3. Develop and maintain firmware for microcontrollers, SoCs, and other embedded platforms.
  4. Optimise system performance to meet low-latency, low-power, and high-reliability requirements.
  5. Conduct characterisation, debugging, and performance tuning of embedded software in a laboratory setting and directly on prototypes.
  6. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and guidelines, maintaining a clean, organised and hazard-free environment.
  7. Work collegially and communicate effectively with management, the team, stakeholders, and/or partners.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience: 3+ years of relevant experience in embedded software development.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with programming languages such as Python, C and its variants (relevant to embedded systems), and experience in hardware control and data analysis.

Eagerness and capability to quickly learn and absorb new and complex technical concepts.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong team player with the proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work in ambiguous and quickly changing environments.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing printed circuit boards relevant to embedded circuits and systems are considered favourably.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing graphical user interfaces to control and interact with embedded hardware.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing and testing FPGA solutions are considered favourably.

What does success in this role look like?

  • Successful completion of the first-generation quantum magnetometry product prototype for demonstration with customers and partners.
  • Extensive contribution to the development of the overall technology roadmap.
  • Creating the technology foundations to enable growth and development of future generations of product.
  • Becoming an integral member of the DeteQt team.

Why Join Us?

  • Rare opportunity to join a funded startup: We have global ambitions and are just at the beginning.
  • Values-led team: We aim to put the needs of our emerging team at the top of the priority list, and will be designing the culture, cadences, and development opportunities to support this.
  • Impactful Work: Contribute to groundbreaking projects that have the potential to revolutionize sensing technologies and applications.

If you are a driven engineer ready to tackle the challenges of quantum magnetometry hardware development and lead a talented team, we encourage you to apply.

We are an equal-opportunity employer and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and experiences.

To Apply: Please submit your resume and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience to info@deteqt.com.au.
