Department of Health is seeking interest from qualified applicants to appoint to the Senior Registrar / Fellow vacancies, within the Trauma Service, Royal Hobart Hospital.
Learn to lead the team and broaden your skills working in a specialist tertiary trauma service.
The Royal Hobart Hospital Trauma Service has positions available for senior registrars in surgery and critical care.
As Trauma Senior Registrar you will care for over 1000 patients (> 300 major trauma presentations) in 12 months as you make the transition to consultant practice in a well-supported, multidisciplinary service with a strong emphasis on education and quality improvement activities.
We have a diverse and inclusive team. Medical staff at all levels will benefit from the opportunity to work closely with the Clinical Nurse Consultant, Trauma Case Managers and experienced allied health practitioners, who champion a holistic approach to care and continuity throughout each patient's injury journey.
Our specialists come from a variety of backgrounds, including emergency medicine, intensive care, anaesthesia, and retrieval medicine. This allows us to offer accredited training with CICM (medicine time – 6 months), ACEM (including TS4 trainees – 6 months) and ANZCA (PFY by individual application). We welcome trainees from any specialty who want to learn how to provide comprehensive, roadside to rehabilitation care of patients with complex and multiple injuries. Clinical time in your primary specialty area may also be possible by negotiation.
In partnership with the trauma staff specialists, the trauma senior registrar will attend trauma calls, lead daily ward rounds, attend the fortnightly trauma clinic, represent the medical team at trauma multidisciplinary meetings, and contribute to teaching and supervision of junior staff. There will also be opportunities to engage in research and quality improvement activities, drawing on comprehensive data from the Tasmanian Trauma Registry with support from our full-time clinical research coordinator. Participation in the staff specialist on-call roster will be offered to enhance clinical autonomy after an appropriate period of orientation and ward-based experience.
The Trauma Service provides five hours of protected teaching time per week for medical staff. Every second week there is an afternoon of structured teaching and simulation. In alternate weeks, time is made available for self-directed learning, supported by a logbook and a wide catalogue of online modules and external resources.
Time with the trauma service will be an excellent foundation for any future medical career. We welcome any questions you may have and hope you will consider applying to join our team.
The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is located in the beautiful waterfront city of Hobart, framed between the Derwent River and Kunanyi / Mt Wellington and offers access to fine dining, impressive arts and a wide choice of accommodation within a short commute.
