Water Quality Permit Writer - (25140540)

We are currently looking for a Water Quality Permitting Scientist with a specialization in groundwater to join our team in the Water Protection Bureau of the Water Quality Division.

Water Quality Permitting Scientists are responsible for performing scientific and technical analyses, calculations, assessments, and determinations essential to the implementation of water quality programs in the State of Montana. This Groundwater Water Quality Permitting Scientist will be responsible for writing individual groundwater permits for facilities discharging both domestic and industrial wastewaters in Montana as well as other permit writing and administrative duties as necessary.

When a municipality, industry, or other entity wishes to discharge water to state groundwater, that entity must first obtain a permit from DEQ. Montana Groundwater Pollution Control System (MGWPCS) permits regulate wastewater discharges by limiting the quantities of pollutants to be discharged. The limits and requirements in the permit help ensure compliance with Montana's Water Quality Standards, State and Federal Regulations, and maintain the designated beneficial uses of the receiving groundwater. DEQ develops the limits and requirements for a given permit based on a facility's operations, type and amount of discharge, and the nature of the receiving groundwater, among other factors.

Individual permits are tailored to each facility and take into account the type and volume of wastewater discharged, the location of the discharge, and the nature of the receiving groundwater. Examples of permitted facilities include municipal sewage treatment facilities, housing developments with their own sewage treatment infrastructure, and industrial facilities needing to discharge certain types of waste.

The Minimum Qualifications For This Position Include:

  • Bachelor's degree in physical, earth, or life sciences.
  • Two years of directly related experience.
