2026 Barwon Health Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Unaccredited Registrar

Responsibilities

• Stepping stone for OMFS training selection
• Participate in outpatient clinics, manage ward patients, assist and operate in operating theatres and perform oral surgery in community centres
• Provide surgical assistance and perform dentoalveolar surgery under local anaesthesia
• Fulfilling 1:4 on-call rosters for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit
• Collaborate with accredited registrar and other members of the surgical team, including trainees and administration staff
• Develop clinical skills and decision-making under consultant supervision
• Support the training pathway and gather referee reports to assist in application to accredited training posts

About The Facility

Major sites include University Hospital Geelong, the McKellar Centre, Barwon Health North, and residential aged care facilities. Mental health, community health and dental services are delivered across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

We are a growing unit with 5-6 consultants who have sub-specialty skills for additional fellowship training after FRACS(OMS). Our unit is known for supervision, case mix and strong training culture.

About The Role

Patient Care: Participating in outpatient clinics, managing ward patients, and assisting and operating in theatres with oral surgery.

Surgical Assistance: Providing support in procedures and performing dentoalveolar surgery under local anaesthesia.

On-Call Duties: Fulfilling 1:4 on-call rosters.

Teamwork: Collaborating with the accredited registrar and other surgical team members, and with dental practitioners in the Oral Health Services department.

Professional Development: Working under consultant supervision to further develop clinical skills and decision-making.

Training Pathway

The unaccredited registrar role provides clinical experience and training that can be a prerequisite for entry into informal or formal accredited OMS training programs run via RACDS, with selection interviews typically in July.

Referee Reports

Supervisors provide referee reports essential for the registrar's application to accredited training posts.
