Applying to become an AFP Recruit

This page is for individuals wanting to apply to become an AFP Recruit. In applying to join the AFP as a Recruit, your application must be for one of the following Recruit roles:

  • Protective Service Officer
  • Police Officer - ACT Policing
  • Police Officer - National Policing

When you begin your application, you'll be asked "What role are you applying for?" and you'll need to select one of the three options listed above. If you're not sure which role you're applying for, click on the links above to learn more about the 3 different AFP Recruit pathways available.

IMPORTANT: It is strongly recommended that you research the roles and consider this carefully before applying. Once you've applied, you will undergo the selection process specific to the role you've selected and may only be considered for that role.

You're about to apply to become an AFP Recruit - what does this mean?
  • The Recruit role is a training pathway through which the AFP hires and trains 'sworn officers' - 'sworn officers' are frontline AFP staff, i.e. they wear a badge and uniform, they carry a firearm, they have legislated powers to enforce the law.
  • As soon as you apply, you'll begin moving through a rigorous selection process (outlined below).
  • If successful, you'll attend the AFP College for 4-6 months, where you'll undertake a qualification and learn practical skills like defensive tactics and driver training.
  • Upon graduation, you'll be 'sworn-in' and commence your role.
Am I eligible to apply?

To apply to become an AFP Recruit, you must meet the following at the time of application:

  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have attained a minimum educational level of a Year 10 Certificate, or higher
  • Hold a valid Australian driver's licence (P Plates are accepted)
What's the selection process?

Once you have submitted your application, please continue to monitor your email address for updates and invitations from recruitment to complete the various gateways. We encourage you to register for the SMS notification option as this will ensure you receive the latest updates and information.

Our selection process consists of the following components. Throughout the process we'll keep you informed of exactly what steps you need to complete and when:

  1. Online testing
  2. Fitness assessment
  3. Integrity checks
  4. Assessment centre
  5. Security clearance
  6. Health assessment
  7. Merit pool
  8. Job offer, and commencement at College

If you successfully complete the selection process, you will then be added to a Merit Pool. While we regularly run courses throughout the year, how soon you may be placed on a course can depend on a variety of factors, including your personal preferences for particular locations or roles.

What can I expect next?

If you meet our eligibility criteria, you will receive an email inviting you to complete the 'Online testing'. This email will include practice tests and other useful resources. Once you have received this information, you'll have 7 days to complete the test.

If successful, you'll then be invited to complete the 'Fitness assessment' - this comes around quickly, so start preparing now (find the fitness standards on our website).
