Our Learning Environment
In recent years, Brisbane Grammar School carefully audited and reviewed its curriculum frameworks and practices. Our curriculum design processes are led by teachers who continually grow and refine their teaching skills. As a result, we are committed to systematically developing effective thinking cultures within all classrooms and staffrooms. We plan learning experiences in the language of student thinking and cognition and give feedback and guide learner improvement through distinct values of inquiry. The School has a well-supported and pedagogically advanced Tablet PC program, with all students in Years 7 to 12 enabled for one-to-one learning. Teachers are encouraged to work together to use technology and space in innovative ways, ensuring adaptive and transformative curriculum delivery. We are growing our capacity to identify and analyse relevant data that helps our teachers to respond to their students' learning needs. In addition, the explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy informs curriculum design and classroom practice.

Job DescriptionAbout the Role
Outdoor Education at BGS contributes to the development of the Grammar Graduate through sequential outdoor learning experiences from Years 5 to 11 utilising Effective Thinking Cultures in Outdoor Education pedagogy. Each year, students reflect upon these place-based experiences building the dispositions of a Grammar learner and leader throughout the outdoor journey.
The outdoor education teacher works in a team of educators to deliver the Outdoor Education program. The Outdoor Education Teacher is responsible for the planning, preparation, implementation and management of outdoor education experiences and facilities. The program includes experiences for Years 5 to 11 students based at the School's Outdoor Education Centre at Lake Moogerah, as well as expeditions to alternative sites, school-based training, and school community events.
The outdoor education teacher reports directly to the Director of Outdoor Education and through him to the DeputyHeadmaster and Head of Senior School.
The Outdoor Educator Teacher is responsible for:
Teaching
- Implementing the School's outdoor education program through developmentally appropriate and sequenced experiences providing an increasingly sophisticated set of physical and emotional challenges.
- Use of effective thinking cultures in pedagogy.
- Reviewing and improving the educational, safety and logistical aspects of the program annually.
- Staying connected to recent innovations and developments within the field of Outdoor Education.
- Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme through registration as an Adventurous Journey Supervisor and planning and conducting expeditions.
- Following the programs operational documents at all times.
Organisational
- Assisting with construction, improvement and maintenance of existing program infrastructure.
- Representing the School with outside groups including local property owners and government agencies in the area.
- Engage with the P&F Support Group, parent and community groups.
- Follow procedures for catering, food preparation and cooking.
Administrative
- Produce weekly reports and media for each program.
- Ensure all program equipment is safe and fully operational at all times.
- Write and update operational documents including risk assessments, standard operating procedures, logistical procedures and teaching resources.
- Collaborate with and assist the Centre's support staff.
Skills & Experience
This position requires:
- Experience working with young people in outdoor education.
- A passion for the outdoors and adventure.
- An understanding of environmental concerns.
- An understanding and acknowledgement of Indigenous culture and history.
- Fit and active lifestyle.
- Clean and professional presentation.
- An ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- An exemplary professional approach when dealing with students, parents and colleagues.
- Strong ICT skills in both Mac/IOS and Microsoft Windows suite.
- An understanding of the needs of boys and how these impact on residential organisation and management.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in a wilderness setting ensuring the safety and care of students.
- Knowledge and ability to continuously manage and assess risk in a variety of environments.
The following qualifications are required to be maintained:
- Tertiary education degree and registration with Queensland College of Teachers.
- Height Activities: Rock Climbing, Abseiling, High and Low Ropes, Zip Lines.
- Paddle sports: Flatwater & Sea Kayaking.
- Bushwalking.
- Registration as an Adventurous Journey Supervisor with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme Queensland.
- Wilderness First Aid & CPR.
- Chainsaw operation.
- 4WD Operation.
Terms
- Working hours are dependent on the program and include overnight duties, on call responsibilities, some weekend and holiday work.
- Work includes an irregular roster including extended durations in an expedition format.
