BEAR Scotland manage and maintain over 1422 km of Scotland's trunk road network in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We work in some of the most scenic but challenging parts of the country on a variety of trunk road maintenance and improvement schemes.

An opportunity has arisen within BEAR Scotland's North West Minor Improvements Team for a Chartered Civil Engineer to work in our Perth office. The role would involve working within a diverse team on the investigation, design, procurement and construction of improvements projects.

Working in the Minor Improvements team offers involvement in a wide range of different projects ranging from Vehicle Restraint System upgrades and new installation, improvements to Sea Wall assets, Geotechnical risk mitigation works, trunk road layby improvements, addressing flooding issues and implementing drainage improvements, traffic sign upgrades as well as providing technical input to all manner of network management related engineering.

Candidates should have experience of civil engineering design as well as a knowledge of health and safety, environmental and commercial aspects of schemes. Candidates should be Chartered through the UK Engineering Council.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are interested in progressing their careers by helping manage the delivery of a diverse programme of work. The successful candidates will have good team working and communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.

Job Purpose:

The successful candidate will assist in the investigation, design, planning, procurement and construction management of improvement works on the North-West trunk road network. The postholder will work with internal and sub-contractors' resources.

Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not restricted to):
  1. Detailed design of trunk road improvements schemes.
  2. Compliance with technical standards.
  3. Working knowledge of Design Manual for Road and Bridges.
  4. Preparation of Departures from Standard when applicable.
  5. Follow Road Safety Audit and Walking, Cycling & Horse-Riding Assessment processes.
  6. Preparation of reports, investigations, feasibility studies and options assessments.
  7. Work as part of a team within NW Minor Improvements and with other BEAR departments.
  8. Produce tender documents, preconstruction information and construction packages for both external tender and in house contractor delivery.
  9. Work with commercial specialists to complete tender evaluations and assist with contract award.
  10. Procure, supervise and measure improvement works.
  11. Work with Environmental specialists to ensure adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented prior to work commencing.
  12. Follow Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company's Integrated Management Systems.
  13. Assist in the team's compliance with the CDM Regulations and ensure that robust risk assessments are carried out before works, operations or inspections take place.
  14. Use Transport Scotland's asset management systems and geographical inventory system to keep inventory data and as built records up to date.
  15. Prepare cost estimates and monitor the internal financial performance of individual schemes.
  16. Assist Graduate Engineers and Technicians within the team, as applicable to role.
  17. Deliver projects within an annual programmes of work.
  18. Provide timely responses to third party correspondence.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  1. Experience in civil engineering design.
  2. Chartered Engineer through UK Engineering Council (essential)
  3. A full approved UK driving licence.
  4. Ability to use AutoCAD software is essential.
  5. Use of Microsoft Office suite of software packages is essential.
  6. Use of Civils 3D software desirable.
