We are currently recruiting for a 0.8 FTE ongoing position based primarily in the Histology Laboratory at the Roseworthy Veterinary Hospital.

The School of Animal and Veterinary Science conducts teaching, research and clinical services at the University of Adelaide's Roseworthy Campus. The school is situated on a 1600ha property that includes a working farm, a full service veterinary teaching facility, animal holding facilities and a range of general purpose and specialist teaching and research spaces and laboratories.

Roseworthy Veterinary Hospital (RVH) is the commercial clinical services structure embedded within the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. RVH is comprised of three distinct business units established to provide the school with financially sustainable clinical teaching environments. These commercial units are the Small Animal Hospital, Large Animal Hospital and Pathology. RVH Pathology provides routine and specialised diagnostic and pathology services to the two veterinary business units and to researchers and external organisations.

About the role:
Working under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, this role is part of the RVH Pathology team, with a primary focus on providing in-house clinical diagnostic support.
The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Technician will perform a wide range of diagnostic tests primarily in histology and will provide support to other departments such as haematology, biochemistry, endocrinology, clinical pathology, parasitology, necropsy and microbiology. The role supports Veterinary Pathologists in various activities, Including providing high quality histopathology slides. Responsibilities also include processing and managing samples using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), preparing reagents and laboratory solutions, maintaining and calibrating equipment, and participating in quality control and assurance programs. Additionally, the role provides technical support and training to students, researchers, and staff, demonstrating laboratory and necropsy techniques while maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient working environment.

The ideal applicant will demonstrate strong communication skills and a proactive approach, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement across laboratory operations. They will be open to cross-training in other laboratory departments and actively contribute to the teaching and support of final-year veterinary and veterinary technology students.
The role requires someone who is comfortable working with animal specimens, as well as biohazardous and chemical materials, and who shows initiative in enhancing laboratory maintenance systems and safety practices.

We are seeking:

  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent work experience in veterinary laboratory sciences.
  • Advanced knowledge in histology techniques such as embedding, microtome use and staining.
  • Experience in performing a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures in a veterinary or clinical setting.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, quality standards (e.g. ISO/IEC 17025), and equipment maintenance.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills with the ability to train and support students and staff.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, quality control, and regulatory compliance.
