About us

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness, and response services, including scientific and specialist capabilities, to Queensland communities. The department covers fire in built and landscape environments and offers multi-hazard emergency responses such as road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous materials, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and supports community safety outcomes.

The department includes Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), and other units working together to prevent, mitigate, and manage fires and emergencies, supporting a large volunteer membership across the state.

QFD is committed to improving its relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities through initiatives like the Path to Treaty and Closing the Gap, enhancing cultural capability.

Purpose of the role

The Fleet Operations team manages fleet mechanical services and scheduled vehicle inspections to meet regulatory requirements, including compliance with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and Transport and Main Roads (TMR) guidelines. The Fleet Maintenance team provides repairs and maintenance throughout the lifecycle of fleet assets, ensuring they are fit for purpose and meet operational and organizational needs.

Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, you will conduct repairs and scheduled maintenance of QFD fire appliances, pumps, systems, and associated equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards. You will also complete job sheets, data entry, and adhere to workplace health and safety policies.

Key requirements

Highly desirable:

  • Current Medium Rigid driver's license (or ability to obtain prior to appointment)
  • Trade certification as an Engineering Tradesperson - Level 1 Motor Mechanic (Heavy Vehicle), or skills/knowledge in heavy motor mechanic environments
  • Skills or qualifications in light vehicle trades will be considered, with intent to update certifications if successful

Special requirements

  • Provide after-hours on-call service for urgent maintenance and repairs of fire appliances, heavy vehicles, and equipment

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Servicing, repairing, and maintaining fire appliances and related equipment to meet legislative and manufacturer standards
  • Using hand tools, special tools, and electronic diagnostic equipment safely and in compliance with safety requirements
  • Participating in ongoing training to maintain skills and work effectively in a team
  • Diagnosing faults, including electrical issues, using diagnostic tools and road tests
  • Updating job sheets, parts inventories, and maintenance records via electronic systems
  • Communicating with supervisors about the condition of fire appliances and equipment after maintenance
