Job Description: Principal Legal Officer (PLO) at NAAJA

Organization Overview

NAAJA, with over 52 years of history, is the Top End's first Aboriginal legal aid office and is dedicated to justice for Aboriginal people. As an Aboriginal community-controlled organization, NAAJA provides culturally responsive, holistic services to empower individuals, families, and communities. It is the largest law practice in the Northern Territory, committed to dignity, respect, and justice for Aboriginal people.

The Role

The PLO reports to the CEO and serves as a key executive leader responsible for delivering legal services across the Northern Territory. This role involves strategic leadership, ensuring compliance with statutory and funding requirements, managing complex legal cases, and representing NAAJA in courts.

Requirements

Applicants must have admission (or eligibility) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory, hold or be eligible for an unrestricted practicing certificate, and possess extensive relevant legal experience, including advocacy in superior courts. Leadership skills, understanding of barriers faced by Aboriginal people, and cultural sensitivity are essential.

The Package

This is a three to five-year contract offering a competitive remuneration of $250,000 plus superannuation, six weeks' annual leave, and salary sacrifice options.
