PositionThe Trainee - Unaccredited Position in Orthopaedic Surgery at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick (SCH), provides an opportunity to a trainee to further develop orthopaedic skills in the spheres of clinical care, orthopaedic procedures, education, research and supervision under the supervision of consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeons. The Trainee's responsibilities will include providing orthopaedic support to the patients of paediatric Staff Specialists and Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs), trauma and emergency support to the patients in all clinical areas of the hospital including the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, inpatient and outpatient areas and at Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH) and the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW). The Trainee will have a role in teaching of junior medical officers, nurses and undergraduates.
Responsibilities- Assist in the provision of skilled orthopaedic support
- Provide orthopaedic consultation and service to other disciplines in SCH, POWH or RHW as per local statement of duties
- Provide assessment and care of patients referred to the relevant orthopaedic service
- Communicate and collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary teams within and outside the hospital
- Provide referral for appropriate continuity of care for patients
- Respond and provide skilled orthopaedic support for presentations of trauma and emergency for patients presenting to the Emergency Department
- Perform orthopaedic interventions under supervision appropriate for level of training
- Build on clinical knowledge and skills in the care of patients presenting to the orthopaedic service
- Contribute to and be involved in education, quality improvement and research activities as required
This position is not accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
Selection Criteria- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
- Minimum three years postgraduate experience
- At least 12 months previous orthopaedic surgical experience, with substantial paediatric experience being highly desirable
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff
- Demonstrated skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving
- Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self education
