About the Opportunity
Located within the broader Inveresk and York Park Precinct, UTAS Stadium is the Tasmanian home of the Northern Bombers Football Club, the Hawthorn Football Club, the northern home of the Hobart Hurricanes, and host to a broad range of sporting and entertainment events.
UTAS Stadium will become the northern home ground for the Tasmania Devils Football Club upon entry to the AFL and AFLW competitions in 2028.
The Assistant Turf Curator plays a key role within the Grounds and Turf Team at UTAS Stadium, supporting the Head Curator in maintaining elite-level turf surfaces in accordance with Stadiums Tasmania's high standards. The position is responsible for assisting in the preparation and upkeep of turf playing fields and surrounding grounds used for AFL, elite cricket, and community events, ensuring surfaces meet the expectations of key stakeholders including the AFL, Cricket Australia, and event organisers.

Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of high-performance turf surfaces and horticulture programs across all playing surfaces,cricket wickets (including drop-in wickets), turf farm and event overlay areas.
- Deliver world class gardens/lawns and open spaces across the precinct.
- Assist in the preparation, renovation, and presentation of turf surfaces for match days, training sessions, and other events.
- Operate a wide range of turf maintenance machinery and equipment including mowers, rollers, utility vehicles, line markers, and aerators.
- Ensure that the venue's horticultural facilities and equipment are safely and properly maintained and presented in good condition.
- Assist with pitch installations, turf monitoring, fertilisation, pest/disease management, irrigation programming, and spraying operations.
- Help maintain safe and presentable surrounds including coaches' boxes, warm-up areas, access points, and outer fields.
- Perform match day and event support duties, including wicket cover management, lighting rig placement, and post-event surface recovery.
- Contribute to routine maintenance schedules and documentation to ensure asset longevity and compliance.
- Follow all WHS procedures and contribute to a culture of safety, care, and operational excellence.
- Participate in scheduled toolbox meetings, contributing to a proactive WHS environment
- Represent Stadiums Tasmania with professionalism and pride at all times, particularly when interacting with AFL teams, broadcasters, contractors, and the general public.
- Carry out turf installations and repairs using harvested turf from the farm, including during high-traffic periods and post-event recovery.
- As requested, attend to the maintenance and upkeep of the greenspaces and surrounds at the Silverdome
- Identify opportunities for efficiency and improvements with relevant stakeholders
Key Success Factors
The role will require someone who is both a leader and hands-on, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines at once.You will be a great communicator and be proactive in identifying risks and improvement opportunities.In addition to demonstrating relevant experiences across the core functional areas of responsibility identified above, the successful candidates will require the below:
Essential:
- Minimum 5 years' experience in curation and turf management at a venue that hosts AFL, State or International Cricket and large-scale entertainment events.
- Minimum certificate three Sports Turf Management or equivalent.
- Risk management and safety expertise
- Class C driver's licence.
- Working with Vulnerable People accreditation (employee) or the ability to gain one.
- Chemical handling competency (Cat 3).
- Demonstrated experience in growing and using drop-in pitches for 1st Class or International cricket matches (including insertion, removal and maintenance).
- Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
- Action orientated, adaptable and innovative approach to planning and execution.
- Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and manage time effectively
- Highly organised, with a focus on detail and the ability to manage multiple programs of work simultaneously.
- A commitment to upholding safety and quality standards.
- High level of personal and professional integrity.
- High energy, enthusiasm and drive, inspiring others to achieve
Desirable
- Knowledge of Tasmanian industry-specific regulations and standards
- Machinery operation competency levels/licences, e.g. forklift, tractor, excavator etc.
- Demonstrated experience in using the Rainbird irrigation system or similar.

Additional Information
Some out of normal hours work and work on weekends will be required.
Some intra-state travel will be required as part of this role.
