Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Trainee (Training Stage 1) to join the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH).

Where you'll be working

Royal Prince Alfred is the principal teaching hospital of the University of Sydney and offers specialty services from its main campus as well as from the Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics, Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, and Dame Edith Walker Hospitals. RPAH is one of Australia's leading hospitals, providing an extensive range of diagnostic and treatment services. Its specialties include cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, cancer, respiratory medicine, neurology, liver, and kidney transplants.

The Emergency Training Network includes rotations to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, The Canterbury Hospital, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Bankstown Hospital, Sydney Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital at Westmead, Liverpool Hospital, and Dubbo Base Hospital.

What You'll Be Doing

The primary purpose of the Trainee in Emergency Medicine is to provide high-quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department.

Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients should operate within their level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and seek consultation with colleagues when appropriate. Trainees work under supervision according to their competence in activities such as:

1. Leading the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients
2. Having direct clinical involvement in patient care, including critically ill patients
3. Providing clinical supervision to junior medical staff
4. Supporting the Emergency Department's overall medical management in collaboration with senior nursing staff
5. Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in patient care
6. Discussing patient conditions and management plans with patients and families
7. Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with specialists
8. Arranging discharge and liaising with community care providers for post-discharge care
9. Participating in teaching, research, and quality improvement programs
10. Role modeling leadership within the Emergency Department

Qualifications and experience should meet the essential requirements for the role, including the ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment, and evidence of application or selection into Fellowship training with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM).

Applicants should demonstrate effective teamwork, communication skills, organizational ability, and a commitment to quality and safety. Willingness to work across facilities and participate in a 24-hour shift roster is required.
