Export Finance Australia (EFA) is the government's export credit agency. We provide financial expertise and solutions to drive sustainable growth that benefits Australia and our partners. Through our loans, guarantees, bonds and insurance options we enable SMEs, corporates, and governments to take on export-related opportunities, and support infrastructure development in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Our mandates have been expanded including in April 2019 to enable us to (i) finance overseas infrastructure in the Indo-Pacific region, (ii) support of the $2 billion Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, (iii) support Australian Government policy initiatives such as financing for critical minerals projects in Australia and the $4 billion Critical Minerals Facility and the Government's $2 billion Southeast Asia Investment Financing Facility.
On 28 October 2021, the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation Act 1991 (Cth) was amended to enable EFA to make equity investments. This has led to the creation of an Alternative Finance function within our Investment and Business Financing (IBF) team. The role will primarily focus on equity and equity-like investments across multiple sectors of the economy, and across our domestic and international geographic footprint.

The Associate Director, Alternative Finance will play a key origination, execution and analytical role in equity, debt and mezzanine financing transactions. This will include potential National Interest Account (NIA) transactions. NIA transactions tend to be highly strategic and complex in nature, often involving the participation of commercial parties, the Australian Government, and governments and financing institutions of like-minded nations.
The IBF business works with government and customers who require complex structured financing arrangements under key mandates including Critical Minerals, Indo-Pacific Infrastructure and our core export credit agency function.
A mix of infrastructure and resources project financing experience is desirable, ideally involving structuring and managing both equity and debt financings.
Contribute to business growth, strategy and market engagement.
- Support senior team members with originating, executing, structuring, and negotiating complex debt, equity and equity-like transactions
- Prepare investment/credit submissions, including board papers where required.
- Instruct internal or external legal counsel on documentation issues.
- Develop strategies for business, sector, and product development within the context of our mandate, our Board approved risk appetite, the needs of our customers and the external environment.
Due Diligence, Structuring and Documentation
- Undertake and manage the necessary due diligence, risk mitigation and transaction structuring. You will also engage with internal and external counsel to ensure that appropriate legal documentation is successfully concluded and that financial close is achieved in a timely fashion.
- Responsibility for managing the process that results in a transaction assessment being compliant with Credit Policy procedures and objectives, and other pertinent obligations including Efic Act compliance and OECD obligations.
Relationship Management
- Support customer relationships and relationships with banks and other partners, developed through the negotiation and execution of transactions.
- Think strategically about risk and ensure risk management (credit, reputational, financial, etc) and governance best practice.
- Work within EFA's Risk Management Framework ensuring compliance with governance frameworks, policies and procedures and contribute to their continuous improvement.
- Ensure own activities comply with our mandate, Efic Act, Board delegations and with various legislative and international obligations relating to export credit agencies. These include the OECD Arrangement for Officially Supported Export Credits, the Common Approaches and the IFC Performance standards, and anti-bribery and corruption initiatives.
- Strong investing and/or debt financing experience across a wide range of market segments, including institutional and corporate customers. There is also a preference for candidates with project and structured and equity financing experience in both the private and government sectors.
- At least [7] years' experience in financial institutions with a background in transaction structuring, investment/credit analysis and familiarity with complex financing arrangements.
- Strong financial modelling, credit, valuation and analysis skills.
- Collaborative, positive, 'can do' mindset, able to drive creative solutions, and is outcomes-focussed.
- Superior stakeholder influencing and management skills, with the ability to deal effectively with customers, investors and financiers, key government contacts, consultants, and colleagues.
- Degree qualified in business, finance, accounting, business administration, law and/or relevant technical disciplines.
- Ability to undertake occasional domestic and international travel.
- Track record of investing or financing experience in mining & resources and/or energy & infrastructure transactions, with strong sector knowledge. (Desirable)
- Experience in growth equity investments would be highly regarded.
- Knowledge of medium to long term ECA/MLA financings/co-financings and political risk insurance/co-insurance. (Desirable)
- International experience, particularly across the Indo-Pacific and Southeast Asia. (Desirable)
- Prior experience working with ECAs or other government financiers in complex transactions. (Desirable)
