About the role

We are seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager to join our Executive Team and lead the operations of our Main Pathology Laboratory in South Australia. In this executive leadership role reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality pathology services, drive operational excellence and maintain full compliance with regulatory requirements. You will drive positive change, oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, supervise scientific, administrative, technical and ancillary functions in compliance with NPAAC (National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council) guidelines and take the lead in identifying and implementing improvements to enhance all facets of the laboratory. As Laboratory Manager, you will play a crucial role in the development, support and performance of a large multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and quality. Your key responsibilities will include:

· Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring efficient utility of human, plant and financial resources

· Monitor quality control procedures to ensure accurate and reliable test results, maintaining compliance with accreditation standards

· Supervise all scientific, administrative, technical and ancillary functions

· Provide scientific and technical expertise in performing and overseeing diagnostic procedures, applying to both established and emerging techniques

· Identifying opportunities for process improvement, implementing changes to enhance efficiency and quality

· Implement and monitor workflow targets to meet priority and triage requirements

· Ensure the laboratory is compliant with National Standards including NPAAC and NATA requirements

· Drive both clinical and non-clinical continuous improvement initiatives

· Lead and Manage a team of Laboratory Supervisors and Managers to drive high performance

· Conduct performance reviews and support professional development with training initiatives

· Encourage culture of teamwork, collaboration, innovation

· Building and maintaining relationships with clinicians, referring doctors and other internal and external stakeholders

To be successful you will have:

A strong background in science with strong people and commercial acumen, and a proven capability in leading high-performing teams and cultivating effective professional relationships, all contributing to the efficient and seamless operation of the laboratory.

· Tertiary qualification in Science, Applied Science, Laboratory Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent that fulfils NPAAC criteria

· Tertiary qualification in Business, Management or related discipline

· Proven leadership experience in a large organisation, preferably in the pathology sector with Significant experience in laboratory supervision.

· Exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written) and time management skills.

· Ability to cope and thrive in a busy environment and exceptional attention to detail and accuracy

· Demonstrated understanding of budgets, operational planning and problem-solving skills

· Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and be confident in using clinical computer systems.

Desirable criteria

· Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant scientific or professional field (e.g PhD, AIMS, AACB membership or fellowship, RCPA Faculty of Science Fellowship)

· A demonstrated experience and knowledge in phlebotomy

· Technical knowledge of laboratory or diagnostic medicine

· Proven ability to manage and lead teams effectively

· Proven ability in driving change management processes
