Netball Queensland (NQ) is the peak body for netball in our state, responsible for the governance, development, promotion and administration of the game across Queensland.
We take seriously our role as custodians of netball and are committed to promoting inclusion, gender equality and diversity. Our focus is on creating an accessible, supportive environment by embedding diversity, equity and inclusion into everything we do—not just as a function, but as everyday practice.
In April 2022, we launched our Reconciliation Action Plan, formalising our commitment to reconciliation through a framework that drives practical, meaningful actions and outcomes.
Our purpose is clear: to enrich lives through netball. Guided by our 2023–2025 Strategic Plan, we aspire to be the most played and supported sport in Queensland, defining what 'winning' means for us and the choices that will create long-term value for our community.
The incredible Nissan Arena is our home—hosting NQ's operations, major community events, and the history-making Queensland Firebirds.
At NQ, our values and behaviours shape our cultural identity and inspire how we grow, play, lead and inspire the game we love. As we strive for the Firebirds to become Queensland's favourite sporting team and continue to build thriving netball communities, we know success depends on the strength of our people.
A career with NQ offers the chance to be part of a high-performance environment, enjoy flexible working, and directly contribute to the sustainability and growth of netball across Queensland.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We're on the lookout for a talented Data Engineer to join our team in a newly created role. This is your chance to shape how we harness the power of data across the organisation and make a real impact on the future of our sport.
Working closely with leaders and staff across the organisation, you'll design, build, optimise and maintain data systems, dashboards and pipelines that make information more accessible and actionable. Your expertise will empower us to better analyse and leverage data—enhancing operations, streamlining processes, and supporting strategic decision-making.
Your first major project will focus on the NetballConnect registration and membership system, ensuring we unlock its full potential as a central data source for our community.
If you're passionate about transforming data into impact and want to contribute to the growth of netball, we'd love to hear from you.
ResponsibilitiesThe Data Engineer will be responsible for the following:
- Data Pipeline Development and Orchestration: Design, implement, and manage robust data pipelines to efficiently collect, process, and store large datasets from various sources (e.g. participation registration, membership data, CRM and marketing automation system, venue data, learning management system, and financial data). Build capability for NQ to automate extraction of data from systems, transform it into the necessary structures and integrations so that it can be loaded into storage for ease of use by those in the business doing analysis.
- Database Management: Create and maintain structured and unstructured databases, ensuring that data is accessible, secure, and well-organized.
- Data Integration: Work closely with other teams to integrate data from different internal and external sources, ensuring seamless and accurate data flow across systems.
- ETL (Extract, Transform, Load): Develop and maintain ETL processes from the ground up using open-source tools or custom-code solutions to ensure the organization's data is clean, reliable, and available for analysis and reporting. Select or build cost-effective solutions rather than relying solely on expensive proprietary systems.
- Data Quality Assurance: Ensure data accuracy and consistency by implementing checks and validation procedures, troubleshooting issues, and identifying areas for improvement. Familiarity with tools/techniques for metadata tracking and data lineage.
- Collaboration with Stakeholders: Work closely with management, third party SaaS providers and other team members to understand data needs and challenges and deliver relevant data solutions to support the organisation's goals.
- Reporting & Insights: Support the creation of dashboards and automated reporting systems to track KPIs and other critical metrics to measure the impact of programs, events, and other initiatives.
- Data Governance, Compliance & Security: Ensure compliance with data privacy and security regulations, such as GDPR or other relevant legislation, to protect sensitive information. Ability to implement role-based access control and experience building processes for tracking changes to data.
- Reporting: Provide regular reporting and WIP updates to COO and the Head of Finance and the Data Project Workgroup.
- Data Project Workgroup and Technology & Digital Board Sub-Committee Meetings: Attendance at all monthly Workgroup meetings and quarterly Technology & Digital Board Sub-Committee meetings (the latter as required).
The Data Engineer requires the following qualifications and experiences:
- Relevant degree in Computer Engineering / Business Information Systems / Computer Science / Data Analytics or Information Technology or similar.
- Experience and proficiency in designing and normalising relational schemas and databases (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server).
- Experience creating star or snowflake schemas, dimensional modelling, and understanding of OLAP vs. OLTP patterns.
- Experience with data pipeline tools (e.g., Apache Airflow, Talend, dbt) and ETL frameworks.
- Familiarity and hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and data storage solutions for hosting databases, data warehouses and pipelines.
- Knowledge and expertise in programming languages SQL and/or Python, with desirable experience in other languages such as Scala, R, or Java.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is a plus.
- Desirable but not essential: Experience with NoSQL and non-relational databases.
- Desirable knowledge of data privacy laws and best practices.
To achieve our vision of becoming the most played and supported sport in Queensland, Netball Queensland must have the best and brightest team on and off the court. As an employee at Netball Queensland your rewards will be:
- Culture: a high-performance culture defined by NQ's values and accepted behaviours and norms.
- Flexibility: a hybrid work model that recognises the benefits of working in the office and working remotely
- Family: 18 weeks paid primary carer leave and 4 weeks paid secondary carer leave
- Wellness: access to employee assistance programs and a fully equipped high-performance gym
- Growth: professional development opportunities and a strong commitment to support your career growth
- Reward and Recognition: remuneration reviewed annually in line with our performance review and career discussion process, regular feedback provided and wins celebrated
- Facilities: modern office facilities in Nissan Arena
- Location: easily accessible location with onsite parking and public transport
- Benefits: tickets to events at Nissan Arena and sponsor discounts
- Social: social committee who organise quarterly all-team events
And above all, the opportunity to directly impact our great game of netball and ensure its sustainability for generations to come
