Job Description

In accordance with Vancouver Island Health Authority's vision, purpose, values, and strategic direction, patient and staff safety is a priority. The Nurse provides holistic care to clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders across various community settings, including detox, stabilization, in-home, and outreach for withdrawal management. Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements, potentially including the use of a personal vehicle.

QualificationsEducation, Training, and Experience

Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as an RN or RPN. Up to two years of recent experience working with clients with addictions and co-occurring disorders in settings such as detox, stabilization, in-home, and outpatient. Knowledge of Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, current CPR, applicable legislation, and community resources. Current First Aid and NVCI certification within three months of employment. Valid BC Driver's License.

  • Knowledge of chemical dependency, including pathophysiology of substance abuse and withdrawal.
  • Understanding of the bio-psychosocial-spiritual model of care and best practices for co-occurring disorders.
  • Ability to work with seriously addicted and mentally ill clients and their families.
  • Effective communication skills, critical thinking, independence, and organizational abilities.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills, with the ability to work with diverse internal and external contacts.
  • Physical ability to perform duties and operate related equipment; basic computer skills.
