Job Description
BlueScope is an Australian-born global success story spanning 15 countries. Our team of over 16,500 people is our strength, and we want our people to be safe, successful, and well. We're leaders and innovators in transforming steel into smart products and solutions that support society, today and in the future. We're proud of brands like COLORBOND steel that inspire and protect everything from hospitals to bridges and stadiums.
At BlueScope, we're looking for passionate, future-focused students who are ready to start their journey into engineering. Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is seeking Materials Engineering Cadets, starting in January 2026.
Our Cadetship program offers an opportunity to accelerate your personal and professional growth by combining paid work with study—a two-for-one situation that puts you ahead of your peers
Cadetships involve a mix of part-time study and work, with university classes once a week. If you're starting straight from year 12, you'll work casually in your first year and attend university full-time afterward.
What Will You Do?
You'll learn about the relationship between the structure and properties of materials and their economic applications.
Rotating through various departments, you'll apply scientific principles to solve technological problems in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. These rotations will help you find the best fit for your career. You'll also assist in designing and controlling processes for producing, shaping, treating, and testing our materials.
Depending on your rotation stage, you may work within:
- Lab environments, testing the quality and chemistry of steel
- Operations teams, managing workflow to meet production schedules
- Processing departments, ensuring quality standards are maintained and exceeded
- Technical roles, solving production or quality issues and improving efficiency
More About You
We welcome students from all backgrounds who are eager to challenge themselves, try new things, and be part of a future driven by innovation, bold ideas, and meaningful work. Engineering combines creativity, impact, and technical skills.
We'd love to hear from you if you:
- Are a Year 12 student ready to turn curiosity into a career and plan to study Materials Engineering at the University of Wollongong (UOW)
- Are already at university (1st or 2nd year) studying or considering transferring into Materials Engineering at UOW
Please note, you need to upload your resume and academic transcript with your application.
What's in it for me?
Joining our Cadetship program offers numerous benefits:
- Get ahead while studying—build practical skills and gain early career advantages
- Work on impactful projects—contribute to diverse, real-world outcomes
- Personal growth—access technical training and development programs to stand out as an engineer or scientist
- Earn while you learn—receive a competitive salary and financial support for your studies
- Support network—mentorship from experienced leaders and professionals guiding your success
Since nearly 50 years, hundreds of Cadets have grown into leaders at BlueScope. We're building careers and shaping the future—maybe yours starts here.
