Employment Type: Part Time, 14 hours per week. The preferred candidate is able to negotiate a separate clinical appointment with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, which may include a position at Prince of Wales Hospital as either a fractional Staff Specialist or a Visiting Medical Officer.
Duration: Continuing
Remuneration: Academic Level D $185K-$204K pro rata or Academic Level E $237,784 pro rata based on experience + 17% super + Annual leave loading
Location: Randwick, Sydney NSW
Visa sponsorship: Not available. Candidates must hold unrestricted work rights to be considered for this position.
Role overview
The Associate Professor / Professor (Level D or Level E) in Surgery will provide academic leadership and foster excellence in innovative teaching, research, and engagement within the discipline. Based at the Randwick Clinical Campus of the School of Clinical Medicine (SoCM), the role will work collaboratively across all SoCM clinical campuses and with the South-Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) to integrate teaching, research, and clinical care. The position is responsible for driving high-quality surgical education, leading original and impactful research, and contributing to curriculum design and delivery in alignment with UNSW's academic standards. The role will mentor staff and students, supervise Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates, and contribute to governance through active participation in committees and leadership groups.
Level D vs Level E:
- Level D: Focus on academic leadership within teaching and research, building national recognition, and developing strong collaborations to advance the discipline.
- Level E: Provides strategic leadership in the scholarship of learning and teaching, drives significant research of international standing, and maintains extensive national and international partnerships to enhance curriculum, student outcomes, and professional engagement.
This position requires a leader who can inspire, collaborate, and innovate across teaching, research, and engagement, and who is committed to advancing UNSW's values, research reputation, and educational mission within the Australian and international surgical community.
Responsibilities and requirements
- Medical qualification registrable in New South Wales, specialist training in a surgical discipline, and fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent.
- A higher degree in a relevant discipline is desirable; strong research record with external funding and publications in top-tier journals.
- Demonstrated leadership and achievement in a managerial role in a university or clinical setting.
- Ability to lead and manage complex organisational change in clinical, research, and education settings; high-level skills in leadership, analysis, liaison, negotiation, and conflict resolution with multidisciplinary teams.
- Clinical subspecialty knowledge and expertise that complements current surgical services.
- Record of delivering quality improvement activities.
- Experience interacting with professional organizations and involvement in broader health system management.
Additional for Level E
- PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
- Evidence of achievement in leading educational strategy and delivering student outcomes at all levels.
- Experience as an educational leader with broad disciplinary expertise; curriculum development across professional levels.
- Knowledge of a range of pedagogical approaches; ability to innovate and develop further.
- Leadership of research projects and teams; supervision of honours and postgraduate research.
- Ability to attract internal and external funding for educational or research initiatives.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; ability to influence across disciplines, faculties, institutions, industry, and accreditation bodies.
- Evidence of being an inspirational mentor and commitment to equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policies.
