Overview

Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Demands and Requirements

Physical Demands: As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Special Requirements: Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to complete specific MCPS courses, including behavioral management which includes nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
  • Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary).
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Certificate/Licensure: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of MCPS curriculum and the MCPS special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
  • ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and state/federal policies and procedures related to special education; ability to apply instructional support.
  • Ability to work effectively with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians; adapt instructional programs and materials; excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Job Details

Wage range: $64,591 - $131,472 based on education and experience.
