Gulf Cotton is looking for a qualified candidate for the position of Manager at Etta Plains Station, situated 125 kilometres north of Julia Creek, Queensland. They are a leader in the irrigation sector in Northwest Queensland and are currently developing an innovative 20,000-acre bankless irrigation system on the expansive 72,000-acre property. This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about agriculture and wants to contribute significantly to one of Australia's key cotton-growing regions.
As the Manager, you will be responsible for all operational aspects of Etta Plains Station. Your main focus will be on managing advanced irrigation systems to optimise water usage while promoting healthy crop growth. You will conduct regular crop assessments to monitor plant health, growth, and yield potential, utilising data-driven approaches for informed decision-making. Collaborating closely with agronomists will be critical to developing and implementing effective strategies aimed at enhancing crop health, increasing yields, and adhering to sustainable farming practices.
You will also create and oversee comprehensive plans for seasonal crop rotations, irrigation schedules, and overall resource management. This approach will ensure optimal production levels while maintaining sustainability standards across the farm.
As a leader, you will mentor and supervise a dedicated team of 6-8 staff members. Your leadership will promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and excellence in daily operations. You will also spearhead initiatives for the further development of infrastructure and operational capacity within the station, aligning with the company's growth objectives. Ensuring high standards in the maintenance of equipment and facilities will be a priority as you implement best practices and preventive maintenance protocols.
Gulf Cotton has already made significant strides, having developed 5,000 acres of bankless irrigation and 10,000 acres of broadacre cropping, with a focus on cultivating high-yield crops such as cotton, sorghum, forage sorghum, and chickpeas. The team is known for its innovative contributions to the industry and is committed to setting high standards for efficient and sustainable farming practices in the region. If you are a forward-thinking leader eager to make a lasting impact in agriculture, we encourage you to apply for this position.
The Offer
This position presents a unique opportunity to work in a remote yet vibrant environment, surrounded by an engaged community that is passionate about outback life and agriculture. You'll receive a competitive salary, which is complemented by provisions for housing, a vehicle, and coverage of basic utilities, allowing you to focus fully on your professional responsibilities.
In addition to the work, there are plenty of recreational opportunities available, such as fishing, water sports, and community activities like campdrafting, especially when the property's dams are full. You'll find yourself at the forefront of agricultural development, where your contributions and leadership will play a vital role in shaping the future of farming in the region.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an ambitious and proactive individual with a minimum of 5 years of farm experience. The ideal candidate will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of our dynamic agricultural environment and will oversee station development initiatives. By fostering teamwork and motivating those around you, you will help create a culture of shared success.
Key Skills and Attributes
- Minimum of 5 years in agricultural practices, with some management responsibilities
- Experience in agricultural development projects (desirable)
- Plane licence (advantageous)
- Mechanical aptitude
- Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to think outside of the box and utilise a 'big picture' plan
