Gunnedah is a town of about 10,000 people in the Namoi Valley, on the North West Slopes and Plains of NSW, 75 km West of Tamworth.
It is situated on the traditional lands of the Gamilaraay people.
It is largely a rural service centre, with a wide variety of farming and grazing enterprises conducted.
The town's population is stable and there is optimism that it will increase with the expansion or establishment of various industries in the coming years.
There are five primary schools and two secondary schools in Gunnedah.
The secondary schools are Gunnedah High School, with approximately 600 students, and St Mary's College, with an enrolment of 383.
St Mary's College was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1879 and the Sisters of Mercy continue to have a presence in the College.
However, the College has been administered by the Diocese of Armidale Catholic Schools Office since 2003.
There are at present three classes in each year level (7-10) in most subjects.
Elective subjects in Years 9 and 10 are offered in vertical classes (mixed Years 9 and 10) to maximise the range of electives offered.
A good range of choices is available in the senior years.
While most students are from Gunnedah, there are significant numbers commuting from Mullaley, Tambar Springs, Curlewis, Carroll, Boggabri, Baan Baa and Narrabri.

This role assumes professional capabilities consistent with 'Highly Accomplished' and/or 'Lead' Australian Professional Standards for Teachers descriptors developed by the Australian Institute of Teachers and School Leadership, although accreditation at this level is not a requirement.
Together With Other Leaders, The Leader Of Academic Care, Learning And Curriculum Works To Ensure That The College/school Is Characterised By Whole school and system approaches based on the Core Catholic Principles and Values, Living Well, Learning Well - A Student Support Framework for the Diocese of Armidale and Strong Instructional Leaders.
A collective commitment and responsibility for improving conditions of faith development, teaching, learning and wellbeing.
A focus on teams as main mode and setting of work.
A results orientation to improve practice and drive continuous improvement.
Commencement The commencement date for this position will be 27 January 2021 or as negotiated with the successful applicant.
Selection Criteria Essential Criteria Demonstrated understanding and alignment with the key ideas underpinning Core Catholic Principles and Values, Living Well, Learning Well - A Student Support Framework for the Diocese of Armidale, Strong Instructional Leaders.
High level collaboration, leadership and influencing skills.
An ability to work as part of a professional learning team, build a model team and make positive contributions to staff professional culture.
The capacity to lead and contribute to the professional development of staff in areas of academic care, curriculum development, NESA requirements, problem solving skills, inquiry cycle planning, and other aspects of contemporary education and pedagogy.
Ability to effectively engage, communicate and mediate with students, families and staff.
Comply with legislative, administrative, and child protection requirements.
Capacity for authoritative, instructional leadership.
A comprehensive understanding of, and ability to articulate, the nature of contemporary, learner-centred pedagogy.
Demonstrated high level expertise as a classroom practitioner.
Appropriate teaching qualifications and experience.
