The Head of Finance ensures that the business operations of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (SGLMG) support the organisation's vision by maximising income generation and managing the company's' finances on a micro and macro level.
The Head of Finance works closely with the CEO, CFO, and Assistant Accountant to realise SGLMG's strategic objectives including management of financial and administrative operations of the organisation.
The Head of Finance will support outsourced services for building maintenance, and office/IT management.
They work closely with the CEO, Executive Producer (EP) to support the development of annual event budgets and the Head of Partnerships in the development of earned income; managing financial reporting to key funders and stakeholders including Destination NSW and City of Sydney and ensuring the CEO, SGLMG Board and ARC (Audit and Risk Committee) are fully informed of the organisations financial position at all times.
Key Objectives: Support the development and application of financial and budgeting policies, ensuring they align with organisational goals, funding obligations, and applicable accounting standards.
Prepare accurate monthly and annual financial statements and reports for review by the Board and key stakeholders.
Ensure all reporting complies with relevant standards (AASB, IFRS) and supports transparent decision-making.
Lead the external audit process each financial year, managing timelines and documentation and liaising with auditors to ensure that audited statements are completed efficiently and shared publicly with members in accordance with SGLMG's governance practices.
Conduct regular analysis of income and expenditure, including for events, ticketing, sponsorship, payroll and grant-related activity.
Provide insights and reporting that help the organisation track financial performance and adjust strategies where needed.
Prepare and update detailed cash flow forecasts, comparing them to annual budgets and actual performance.
Offer practical advice to ensure the organisation maintains healthy liquidity and manages financial risk.
Collaborate with the Head of Festival and other teams to develop and review annual budgets and forecasts, helping to ensure they are realistic, sustainable, and strategically aligned.
Review and reconcile bank accounts, receivables, payables and other key accounts on a monthly basis, identifying discrepancies early and supporting the accuracy of financial records.
Oversee payroll processing, superannuation contributions, and compliance with employment-related financial obligations, ensuring all staff entitlements and reporting are completed accurately and on time.
Ensure compliance with financial and tax regulations, including preparing or assisting with taxation returns and relevant reports for both the organisation and associated individuals where required.
Maintain and improve internal controls to support sound financial practices, protect assets, and meet audit and regulatory expectations.
Regularly review and refine these controls as the organisation grows and evolves.
Oversee and maintain the organisation's MYOB accounting system, supporting day-to-day entries and reporting, and providing guidance on upgrades or integrations as needed.
Work with banks, funders, and financial service providers to manage accounts, facilitate grant income or capital projects, and explore financial options where required.
Contribute financial advice on operational planning, event management and business structures, ensuring all activities are evaluated for financial impact and sustainability.
Deliver internal financial training to staff and project leads, helping them understand relevant processes and their role in financial compliance.
Support broader organisational goals, contributing to a workplace culture that reflects SGLMG's values of inclusion, creativity, and accountability.
Essential: CPA qualifications preferred or; Tertiary or vocational education in accounting with equivalent relevant experience.
Accounting, finance, administration in a NFP or small-medium business.
Providing management reports to Executive and Board.
Managing employees and/or volunteers.
Financial accounting, taxation, compliance reporting and budget preparation.
HR/management, payroll administration.
Developing policies, systems and procedures.
Exposure to community-focused and volunteer-based organisations Experience with MYOB and general MS Office products.
An entrepreneurial approach to growing organisational income from earned source.
Outstanding planning, organisational and communication skills.
Desirable Previous experience working with the LGBTQIA+SB and/or First Nations communities.
Leadership position within LGBTQIA+ communities.
