About the Role We're looking for a Disk Imaging Assistant to join Swinburne's Digital Heritage Lab.
This part-time 0.2 FTE role (one day a week) is ideal for someone wanting flexible work to complement study, research, or other professional commitments.
In this role, you'll help preserve Australia's digital heritage as part of the ARC LIEF-funded project "The Australian Emulation Network Phase 2 – Extending the Reach." You'll create disk images of vintage software, build legacy environments for the Emulation as a Service Infrastructure (Eaa SI) platform, and take part in outreach with artists, training them in how to image and preserve their own materials.
We're seeking someone with knowledge of digital preservation practices, experience imaging floppy and optical disks, and familiarity with vintage operating systems such as DOS, early Windows, classic Mac OS, Commodore or Amiga.
An interest in digital art and cultural heritage will be highly valued.
This is a rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience in digital preservation while enjoying the balance of a flexible, part-time role.
About You To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
An understanding of digital/software preservation practices and why stabilising at-risk media matters.
Experience imaging floppy and optical disks with tools like Applesauce.
Ability to follow workflows, document processes, and manage the data produced.
Familiarity with vintage operating systems (DOS, Windows 3.11, Windows 98, Mac OS7, Mac OS9, Commodore, Amiga).
Experience with Emulation-as-a-Service Infrastructure and vintage file formats.
A genuine interest in digital art and culture.
The ability to train and share knowledge with others.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a relevant Arts or technical discipline.
Relevant work experience or a combination or relevant work experience and education/training.
