What is the role? Your responsibilities will include: Review of connection infrastructure and connection studies to determine risks during project development and due diligence assignments for solar and BESS projects between 2 MW – 1 GW Load flow studies in PSS/E and Sincal to inform feasibility assessments for solar and BESS projects between 2 MW – 1 GW Connection studies for distribution network-connected solar and BESS farms in accordance with NER Chapter 5 A and DNSP requirements (steady-state/load flow, dynamic/transient stability, protection, power quality, frequency injection) Liaising with equipment OEMs, DNSPs, and modelling software representatives Travel to Pacific Island Countries for on-the-ground assessment of network and generation infrastructure Development and testing of load flow, dynamic/transient, and protection models of electricity networks in the Pacific in DIg SILENT Power Factory Advising Pacific Island utilities and governments on grid upgrades required for increased renewable energy integration Keeping abreast of technical and regulatory changes affecting the industry Contributing to proposals lead by others in the company, as required Contributing to projects led by others in the company, as required The role is offered as a full-time or part-time position; we would consider 0.6 to 1.0 FTE.
Who are we looking for? Knowledge PSS/E, PSS Sincal, PSCAD and DIg SILENT Power Factory Grid connection application processes and studies required: load flow, dynamic/transient, protection, power quality Approximate costs of various network augmentations typically required to remediate grid impacts of new generators (e.g.
feeder upgrades, substation upgrades, protection upgrades, etc.) Common practices and network topologies at Australian DNSPs (in particular Essential Energy) Contacts in the renewable energy or broader energy industry Relevant Australian and international standards, regulations (NER in particular), DNSP and AEMO requirements, and industry best practice Skills Load flow analysis, using both power factor and voltage droop voltage control methods.
Dynamic/transient studies, in accordance with DNSP requirements (e.g.
response to specified frequency, voltage, and fault disturbances, power ramping).
Power quality studies, in particular flicker, voltage unbalance, harmonics, and frequency injection studies.
Protection coordination studies, including identification of additional protection devices on network (or modification of location/settings on existing protection devices).
Protection specification and sizing.
Ability to comply with NSP requirements at minimal capital expenditure (i.e.
minimise network upgrades or additional equipment) General MV protection specification and sizing Excellent interpersonal skills MS Office suite Experience working with draftspeople (direction, mark-ups, and reviews) Power Factory, PSS Sincal, PSCAD, PSS/E Python scripting for the software packages above Substation design to AS2067 Experience Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power systems engineering or equivalent Permanent working rights in Australia 5+ years' experience in power systems studies and grid connection processes Master's degree or Ph D in electrical power engineering or power systems engineering Registered as a professional engineer or chartered with Engineers Australia Over five years' experience in power systems modelling Experience with equipment OEMs and Australian DNSPs Attributes ITP Renewables values people who are: Clever : We value creativity, innovation, and the ability to cut through the chaff to the essence of a problem.

This role is not a typical Power Systems Engineer role.
You will need a sense of adventure, a willingness to travel internationally, the ability to think from first principles, and the ability to communicate clearly in an environment of uncertainty.
Technical details can be scarce in the Pacific Islands, so you'll need to be creative in finding solutions or making solid assumptions for your analysis.
We are one of the leaders in NER Chapter 5 A grid connections, and provide technical due diligence reviews of NER Chapter 5 generator connection applications prepared by others; however we no longer prepare Chapter 5 applications ourselves.
Therefore, engineers whose primary ambition is to prepare NER Chapter 5 applications should not apply for this position.

Where is the job located? ITP Renewables' headquarters are in Canberra, with an office in Sydney, and remote workers in Adelaide, Fiji, and the Northern Rivers.
This role will be based in either Canberra or Sydney.
While we generally encourage in-person interaction, we have a flexible working policy and understand that working full-time from an office doesn't suit everyone.
