Southern NSW Local Health District covers a large area of the state, from Goulburn and Crookwell to the Victorian border, and surrounds the ACT on three sides, a total of 44 537sq kms.
It extends from the pristine beaches of the NSW South Coast, the farmlands of the Southern Tablelands, across the picturesque Great Dividing Range and the spectacular Snowy Mountains.
Southern NSW LHD comprises of 2 Networks – Inland, centred around Goulburn, Crookwell, Queanbeyan, Yass, Braidwood, Cooma and Bombala-Delegate, and Coastal, cantered around Bega, Batemans Bay and Moruya in the far south-east corner of NSW.
Where you'll be working Cooma Hospital is in Southern NSW LHD, approximately 4 hours from Sydney (397 kms) and 1.5 hours from Canberra (116 kms).
Cooma is a unique Alpine hospital receiving trauma from the two major ski resorts in NSW, located at Thredbo and Perisher, approximately 75 minutes' drive away.
Cooma was established in 1849, is located in the Monaro region and has a population of approximately 6,700.
It is situated on Ngarigo lands.
Today, it is a significant town for winter tourism with its proximity to the snow fields, increasingly popular in the summer for sports such as mountain trail biking and fishing, and the base for the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
It has the nickname of "Gateway to the Snowy Mountains".
Cooma ED is within the new clinical services building which has 20 beds.
The ED has a Level 3 role delineation and has a 2-bay resuscitation area, 7 acute beds, including isolation rooms and a consult room.
The department is led by FACRRMs and GP VMOs with expertise in Emergency Medicine.
A typical day in the ED sees 35-75 (during the winter surge) undifferentiated patients, adult and paediatric; about 12,000 patients per year, with significant acuity and complexity across a wide range of conditions, including trauma.
Although it is not a designated Trauma centre, the proximity of the snow fields and the area's geographic isolation make Cooma Hospital the logical staging post for trauma from the snow fields.
The Canberra Hospital is the nearest Tertiary referral centre, and complex trauma from Cooma and the snow fields is referred there for ongoing treatment.
Goulburn is Cooma's regional referral hub and is a Level 4 role delineation with a Level 4 ED, ICU and Theatres.
The ED is well supported by Anaesthetics with 24/7 Anaesthetic cover, Maternity and an Inpatient Unit.
A Close Observation Unit is currently in development.
General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery perform selected elective cases in theatres, but do not currently perform emergency work at the site.
Paediatric support is available via both Level 4 sites within the LHD, from Goulburn and South East Regional Hospital in Bega.
Mental Health is also supported via other LHD sites, from the Goulburn Hospital campus, or the South East Regional Hospital campus.
The hospital has a close academic and training partnership with the ANU Rural Clinical School, and has teaching facilities on site.
The hospital is currently accredited for JMO training, ACRRM and RACGP training.
Cooma ED is accredited for EM Core Generalist Training (CGT) and Advanced Skills Training (AST) with ACRRM.
CGT training is also offered throughout the hospital.
Work is underway to expand training into the EMET program.
