About the role

We are seeking a Principal Planner to join our NSW Planning team on a permanent basis, based in our Wollongong or Sydney offices.

As a Principal Planner, you will contribute to Stantec's business goals by providing professional planning and resource management advice in statutory and strategic planning.

You will have the opportunity to work independently as a Principal planner on your own projects, while also contributing to multi-disciplinary project teams. Our team works on a range of land development, infrastructure, and strategic planning projects across New South Wales.

Day-to-day tasks will involve:

  • Demonstrating proficiency in urban planning research, data analysis, and report writing, with a comprehensive knowledge of NSW urban planning and environmental legislation.
  • Acting as project manager with planning, programming, and coordination of projects to ensure that project outputs meet or exceed agreed goals.
  • Developing project plans and strategies for the completion of major projects, including identification of business resource requirements.
  • Managing or assisting with the preparation of strategies, reports, environmental impact assessments, and other planning documentation and submissions on behalf of clients.
  • Undertaking technical and quality reviews of documentation prepared by the planning team to ensure that documentation and service levels meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Leading and assisting with the preparation of tender documentation.
  • Fostering client relationships and identifying business opportunities.
  • Growing, developing, and mentoring junior staff.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Urban and Regional Planning or Architecture/Urban Design or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Proficiency in urban planning research, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Extensive experience in statutory or strategic planning, preferably within NSW.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • An interest in working on a broad variety of projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to liaise with the team, managers, and clients.
  • A commitment to self-improvement and continuing professional development.
  • The drive and passion to solve problems and produce innovative solutions.
