As the key building and plumbing regulator in Victoria, the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) prioritizes consumers—the people who live, work, and occupy buildings across the state—and strives to increase their confidence in the building industry. The Authority regulates for better consumer protection and is committed to safety, compliance, and buildings that last. The VBA provides oversight of practitioner capability through effective and efficient registration and licensing processes, monitors industry compliance with building and plumbing standards through proactive inspections and audits, and uses enforcement powers when appropriate to achieve compliance and act in the public interest. Additionally, the VBA applies intelligence and data, including research and analytics, to better inform our regulatory strategy and approach, and shares its technical knowledge and expertise to improve the regulatory system and support builders, plumbers, and other practitioners in delivering positive consumer outcomes.

About the Role

The FOI Officer is responsible for administering the VBA's Freedom of Information (FOI) function and ensuring the VBA meets legislative obligations. Reporting directly to the Managing Legal Counsel - Legislative Functions, Advice & Commercial, this role leverages a sound understanding of FOI principles and process, keen attention to detail and excellent time management skills to prioritise and consistently deliver in a high-volume, deadline driven environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesManage FOI requests within statutory timeframes and requirements, acting as an FOI decision-maker and preparing written decisions.Support key stakeholders by assessing legislative requirements, leading FOI reporting, preparing correspondence, conducting research, building relationships, and ensuring accurate record keeping.Respond to external reviews by OVIC, advise senior management on FOI interpretation, and support information release according to VBA policies.Maintain best practices for FOI templates, improve processes, build the FOI brand, and create educational materials for VBA staff training.
