Australia's premier science organisationDo you have experience in analytical chemistry or food science? We are currently seeking a motivated Research Technician to join our CSIRO Agriculture & Food business unit in a diverse, hands-on role


CSIRO's Food Program helps the Australian food industry compete in domestic and global markets, and has the scientific expertise that underpins the development and delivery of healthy, safe and sustainable foods, food ingredients and beverages.

In this lab-based role, you will join our multi-disciplinary 'Food Chemistry' research team based at Werribee, and support a variety of strategic and applied research projects that will add value to Australia's primary food industries.


Your duties will include:

  • Efficient planning, scheduling and execution of a wide range of research projects in the general laboratories.
  • Performing general laboratory duties such as preparing samples, cleaning, operating and maintaining laboratory wares, analytical equipment & related software, and maintaining safe working practices to support research activities of the Food Program.
  • Undertaking experiments, laboratory analyses or technology development activities (some nonroutine) using a range of techniques which may include LECO nitrogen analysis, ICP-OES, GC, GC-MS, GC-SPME, HPLC, LC-MS, texture analysis and rheology, particle size analysis and other routine laboratory analysis.
  • Purchasing consumables and maintaining equipment in a timely manner to ensure completion of experimental work and procedures.
  • Adapting existing techniques and components to meet the specialised needs of different research activities.
  • Maintaining confidentiality when dealing with commercially sensitive information.
  • Contributing to engaging with external clients and writing project reports.

AU$68K - AU$86K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in chemistry or biochemistry, food science & technology, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Sound understanding of and demonstrated capability in laboratory skills in food science and/or physical/analytical chemistry, including LECO nitrogen analysis, ICP-OES, GC, GC-MS, GC-SPME, HPLC, LC-MS, texture analysis and rheology, and particle size analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop methods, and overcome technical & practical problems in the areas of physical/analytical chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management such as scheduling, monitoring and completing tasks, as well as the agility and willingness to concurrently work on different projects and with different project teams.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary, regionally dispersed research Program.
  • A positive mindset, with a history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes, and the ability to work in and foster a collaborative environment.
