The Salvation Army Asylum Seeker & Refugee Service (ASRS) offers a specialised Emergency Relief & Material Aid program and a range of support programs to people seeking asylum and refugees.


The ASRS Emergency Relief & Material Aid program provides specialised support to people seeking asylum, who reside in the Northern & Western suburbs of Melbourne.

The program is designed to support people seeking asylum who are vulnerable, disadvantaged and find themselves in financial and other forms of immediate crisis.

About the role

We are currently seeking a values-driven Emergency Relief Assessor to provide direct assistance to people seeking asylum and able to speak a community language.

As an Emergency Relief Assessor, you will be responsible for assessing community member needs and determining appropriate financial assistance (emergency relief) and/or referrals.


This position is an opportunity to provide direct assistance to people seeking asylum and being able to speak a community language and demonstrated experience of working with people seeking asylum would be an advantage.

You will successfully

  • Conduct interviews and assessment for emergency relief (ER) with community members over the phone in accordance with Doorways guidelines
  • Determine the assistance to be provided in line with Doorway's standards of practice
  • Community members are assisted to access support services through referral and advocacy to service providers within and external to The Salvation Army, where appropriate
  • Actively support the local mission delivery model by working collaboratively with other Salvation Army mission expressions
We currently have part time position available 12 hours per week.

Current roster is Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. This position is based at our Asylum Seeker & Refugee Service - 12 Tinning Street, Brunswick. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award, Level 3.

You will have

  • Diploma level (preferred) or Certificate IV (minimum) qualification in a related field (Community Services etc)
  • Experience working in the community services sector
  • Experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds would be beneficial
  • Experience working in a fastpaced environment (contact centre) would be highly regarded
  • Ability to speak Farsi, Arabic or Tamil (highly desirable)
  • A current and valid VIC Working with Children's Check
  • A willingness to undergo a National Police Check
