The Legal Services Commission is at the forefront of regulation in maintaining the standards of lawyers, public confidence in the administration of justice and protecting consumers. As a Litigation Lawyer with the Commission, you will be involved in advocating on behalf of the Commissioner in disciplinary matters, injunction applications, prosecution of summary offences and related functions. The work is challenging, complex, and rewarding.

As a Lawyer with the Commission's Litigation team, you will assist in the performance of the Commission's functions under the Legal Profession Act 2007. The role includes independent and collaborative work to support other lawyers, investigators, other regulatory litigators and the Commissioner in discharging regulatory functions. You will undertake a range of legal work, with key responsibilities that require the ability to:

  • prepare, instruct, and appear in discipline applications, prosecution of summary offences, injunction applications and other enforcement action before disciplinary bodies and the courts.
  • advise, support, and provide leadership to staff of the Commission and actively participate in fostering a team environment and positive culture, and understand/value the contributions individual roles play in the success of the Commission's outcomes.
  • communicate effectively with and manage the expectations and demands of a wide range of internal and external stakeholders ranging from senior members of the legal profession, through to other members of the public who may have a limited understanding of the legal system and processes.
  • identify relevant issues in complaints and investigation matters and potential complaints against legal practitioners, law practice employees and unlawful operators and advise on evidentiary requirements for any subsequent litigation of the issues.
  • other duties as directed by the Commissioner and senior members of the Commission from time to time, including:

assisting other teams of the Commission when operationally required

recommending improvements to the Commission's policies, procedures, work practices and management systems to enable the Commission to keep and maintain high standards of service and to continually improve its standards of service

contributing to the Commission's project, research, policy and educational activities.

You:

  • will abide by the Australian Solicitor Conduct Rules (as amended from time to time) and display high standards of professional ethical conduct at all times.
  • may be responsible for a number of statutory delegations on behalf of the Commissioner from time to time.

The successful applicant must be admitted as an Australian lawyer and being eligible to obtain a practising certificate as a legal practitioner in Queensland at the time of appointment. Five years or more recent years of litigation experience is desirable and private legal practice experience will be well regarded.
