The Governance Team within the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is seeking a dedicated and skilled Governance and Legal Counsel professional to join their dynamic team.

Our Legal and Governance Operations team is integral to the Diocese's mission, providing comprehensive legal support and governance oversight across a vast area—from Swansea in the south, Taree in the north, and inland to Scone, Merriwa, and Denman.

The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is committed to serving its community through pastoral care, health care, social welfare, education, and childcare services. This diverse portfolio demands a broad range of commercial contractual requirements and stringent legislative and governance compliance, including safeguarding functions. As a Governance and Legal Counsel professional, you will play a pivotal role in delivering expert legal advice and solutions directly to the organization and its stakeholders, minimizing the need for external outsourcing.

We are looking for a professional with proven experience in drafting and reviewing commercial contracts and providing legal advice on a variety of matters including commercial law, construction, employment, commercial agreements, intellectual property, and litigation management. The ideal candidate will have over 5 years of post-admission experience, demonstrating sound commercial judgment and a proactive approach to complex and diverse legal issues.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this position is to provide generalist legal support to the Governance team and the leaders of Diocesan Agencies by providing timely and accurate legal advice on: commercial legal matters to construction matters, employment matters, commercial agreements, intellectual property, the management of matters being or likely to be litigated, child protection and family law and other areas as required depending on organisational need.

The Governance and Legal Counsel will provide high level legal support to the Agency Directors. The position also plays an important role in supporting senior leadership to manage legal risk. This position also plays an important role in developing content for publication on the intranet and training for staff in key areas of legal risk.

The position will be responsible for supporting the Manager Legal and Governance Operations in providing a high performing legal support function and drive strategic aspects and process improvements.

The incumbent commits to working within Work Health and Safety guidelines and Code of Conduct at all times whilst in the employ of the Catholic-Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

EXPERIENCE/CRITERIA

  • Extensive and broad knowledge of generalist legal work
  • Ability to engage, inspire, influence, coach and deliver outcomes
  • Experience in liaising and advising Senior Management / Stakeholder level
  • Demonstrated ability to persuasively and effectively negotiate
  • Sound communication skills
  • An ability to manage high demands in a timely manner

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tertiary qualification of Bachelor of Law, or equivalent, coupled with an unrestricted practising certificate
  • Admission as a lawyer, barrister or a solicitor of the Supreme Court of a State or Territory.
  • 5 years + equivalent experience in legal practice
  • Current Driver's Licence
  • Successful clearances in regard to Working with Children and Criminal background checks
