Mechatronic Engineering is a "fusion" of mechanical devices and electronic control systems.

With the ever-increasing reach of robotics and autonomous systems, Mechatronic Engineering becomes the pivotal foundation of innovation in various industries such as aerospace, agriculture, biotechnology mining and energy resources.

Curtin Mechatronics Engineering discipline has become a dynamic 'ecosystem' - constantly evolving and adapting in response to changes to industry requirements and technological advancements.


The Formula SAE-A is a competition where university students design, build and compete in their very own Formula-style open-wheeled racing car.

The Curtin Motor Sports Team (CMT) develops racing cars which compete in this competition annually. CMT is ran by a team of Engineering students, mainly from the Mechatronics, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering disciplines. In the past, the engines developed were petrol fuelled engines. We have since moved on to develop electric powered racing cars.

The Engineering Technical Support team works hand in hand with the CMT in the development and manufacturing of these racing cars that compete in the Formula SAE races.


Your new role
An opportunity exists for a Mechatronics Technical Officer to join the team.


This is an interesting role which will see you supporting exciting projects such as the design and development of electric powered vehicles with the Curtin Motorsports Team and supporting the latest research and development works in the field of medical robots and space science technology.


The primary duties of your role will include:

  • Providing technical support for teaching and research activities in the discipline of Mechatronics Engineering, including installation, calibration, maintenance and setup of electrical systems, measuring instruments and other specialised electronics and software systems.
  • Liaising with the Technical Operations Coordinator and ensure laboratories operations are properly resourced and develop improvements of laboratory practical and provide guidance on best practice for lab processes.
  • Maintenance of general and specialised laboratories and equipment, including undertaking safety checks, servicing and electrical repairs.
  • Training staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students in the procedures and use of laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatuses.
  • Ensuring staff and students can safely perform their duties, especially when working with potential electrical hazards or where specific safe techniques are required for a process and to intervene when unsafe procedures are identified.
  • Development of Plant Risk Assessments (PRA) and Safe Work Procedures (SWP).


This is an active and engaging role where no two days are the same, allowing you to put your problem-solving skills to the test.


You will be qualified (diploma/bachelor level) in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, or obtain a post-trades certificate, or advanced trade certificate and extensive experience as a technician.


Furthermore, you will have the following work experience:

  • Working knowledge with lithium battery
  • Working with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)
  • Microprocessor programming using C/C++ programming language
  • Object oriented programming languages (e.g. Python, VS C# etc.)
  • Analog and Digital Electronic circuit design & development
  • Electronic circuit (digital and analog) troubleshooting
  • Mechanical designs using computer aided software (preferably Solidworks)
Knowledge and experience in the following area would be

- advantageous_ to this role:

  • WA Grade A electrical workers licence and a working knowledge of AS 3000, AS 3008, and AS 206
  • High voltage DC (HVDC) and battery management system (BMS)
  • PCB design software, preferably Altium Designer
  • Mechanical designs using computer aided software (preferably Solidworks)
