About the role

As a Building Inspector, you will conduct and co-ordinate Building Inspections, in accordance with relevant Acts and Regulations, to ensure the provision of a responsive customer service to the community.

This includes investigating complaints and breaches of the relevant Acts and Regulations and to carry out and co
- ordinate the appropriate action to ensure compliance and closure within relevant time limits.

  • Day to day duties include but not limited to_:
  • Carry out the inspection of buildings both in and out of the City of Glen Eira, at various stages of construction to ensure compliance with the permit documentation, the Building Act, Building Regulations, Building Code of Australia and other Codes, Standards and Community Local Laws.
  • Investigate complaints and take appropriate action as evidence of these investigations to ensure compliance with the Building Act, Building Regulations, and Community local laws.
  • Provide technical support to Councils Planning Enforcement Officers and investigate breaches, when required by the Coordinator Statutory Building Services and take appropriate action compliant with the Planning and Environment Act, Regulations and Glen Eira Planning scheme.
  • Liaise with the Building Surveyors and Administration teams to ensure most effective resources are placed to ensure tasks are completed within statutory and corporate time limits.
  • Contribute ideas and proposals aimed at improving the quality of the Building Services Unit in accordance with Council's objectives and to monitor its effectiveness.

About you

You will bring a positive attitude to the workplace and be highly regarded for your judgement and ability to interpret legislation and policy.

Provide the capability of guiding your team to solve complex problems and to efficiently manage competing demands.

Developed skills in oral/written to be able to communicate effectively across a wide spectrum of professions, builders, trades people and the public.


The following is also required:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Building Inspections or Surveying
  • Registered as a building practitioner Building Inspector Unlimited or Limited with the Building Practitioners Board.
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of building practices and standards
  • Extensive municipal or private building inspection experience
  • Employee Working with Children Check (or willing to obtain)
  • Current Driver's License mandatory
