The 'Stepping Into' Internship Program
- Are you in your last or second last year at university, or a recent postgraduate?

If so, the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) 'Stepping Into' Internship Program can help you to gain paid, practical work experience relating to various degrees and related disciplines.
We are currently looking for interns for the Winter 2023 intake. The internship will take place between June-August 2023.
The opportunity
The Child Law team are looking for an intern who brings enthusiasm and drive to the role of Paralegal.
What you'll do
If you are interested in pursuing legal work in the area of child protection this may be the opportunity for you
As part of this internship opportunity, you may be tasked with:
- Providing direct legal support to child law solicitors in preparing court documents, reviewing evidence and conducting legal research.
- Partnering with Child Protection Caseworkers who work with families where a child is reported to be at risk of harm.
- Working as part of a passionate and supportive team with various backgrounds and experiences.
The team
The Child Law team provides advice and representation to child protection caseworkers working with families where a child is reported to be risk of harm.
The Litigation team represent the State in proceedings for the removal of children from their parents where there is an unacceptable risk.
The proceedings require seeking orders for long term care of children with guardians, foster carers or restoration to parents.
The Guardianship Taskforce sits within the team working to achieve permanency for children in foster care through the making of guardianship orders to people known to the children.
Child Law is a challenging area that requires resilience as we work through cases where children have encountered neglect, domestic violence, physical harm, sexual harm, drug abuse and homelessness.
