Functional behaviour assessment (FBA) is a process for collecting information to help determine why problem behaviour occurs and to serve as a basis for the development of an Individual Behaviour Support Plan (IBSP).

Research has shown that interventions developed from an FBA are more likely to be effective in reducing rates of problem behaviour.


FBA aims to:
- define behaviour in specific, observable and measurable terms
- determine what aspects of the environment or situation contribute towards the behaviour
- identify the consequences which maintain the behaviour.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the development and implementation of functional behaviour assessments, behaviour intervention plans and crisis plans for identified students.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, clinical and other support staff and provide constructive feedback regarding student behaviour
  • Track student progress; develop a data system to collect and summarize behavioural data.
  • Maintain records of students reports, services provided and behavioural data.
  • Measure goals and objectives of behaviour support plans to ensure they are being met.
  • Support the implementation of research and evidence based methods of classroom management and behavioural supports and strategies.
  • Serve as a resource/consultant to teachers, parents and other school personnel.
  • Coordinate stakeholder meetings, to coordinate and implement behavioural interventions and supports.
  • Build capability of staff and families to strengthen practice through ongoing workshops and information sessions
  • Coordinate between teachers and parents to implement behavioural interventions.
  • Communicate with parents, HODs and case managers in regards to students' progress.
  • Analyse behavioural interventions to determine success.
  • Assist students in identifying inappropriate behaviours and develop better behaviour alternatives.
  • Monitor and adjust programs designed for each student.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
