Based in Melbourne, the Principal Engineer you'll be at the heart of a new squad of approx. 3-8 engineers, shaping and delivering our Shell Energy's Digital product roadmap starting with our public website.
This is a fantastic opportunity to build and lead a team that owns highly visible products critical to the success of our customers and for our globally recognised brand in Australia.

To be successful in this role, you will, in close collaboration with other Principal Engineers and the Architecture and Enablement team, lead your team of engineers to deliver industry world class outcomes which are operationalised and productionised to provide capability to Shell Energy to implement its strategic plans as well as flex to meet future business needs.

This role will be able to introduce new ways of working through the adoption of best practices in Software Engineering, Cloud Services, Test Automation, CI/CD, Site Reliability Engineering, and modern Application Architectures. You will exemplify self-organising behaviours, a continuous improvement mindset and an inclusive one-team culture.


Lead the change, from the frontline

In this role you'll:

  • Lead the growth, direction, and delivery of software, deployment automation, continuous integration, and quality assurance practices for applications in the Digital domain;
  • Be accountable for the day-to-day operation of Digital services – we believe in "you build it, you run it";
  • Mange technical and security compliance to engineering standards and reduce technical debt;
  • Support the development, estimation, and implementation of the platform roadmap while continually refining and assessing short term objectives;
  • Monitor and manage the performance and availability of the platform and ensure incidents from all sources are triaged quickly and prioritised according to impact and value;
  • Lead a team of engineers, provide technical mentorship, and manage performance within that team; and
  • Collaborate with the broader engineering practice to continually lift the quality and value of the overall digital technology business unit.

What you'll bring

You're a deeply experienced frontend or full-stack software engineer with demonstrable, hands-on experience across the stack, including:

  • Excellent application development skills across a range of technologies, including:
    • React, Typescript and Node; ideally in conjunction with AWS
    • and/ or a headless CMS such as Contentful beneficial
    • Good knowledge of SQL and database design and skills in data analysis
    • Experience with NoSQL or OODB would be ideal
    • Prior experience with C#, .NET and/ or MS SQL Server advantageous
  • Expertise in AWS Cloud is preferred, including:
    • Infrastructure (Cloud Formation, VPC, IAM)
    • Infrastructure as code (CDK)
    • Compute (Lambda, EC2, ECS, EKS, Fargate)
    • Storage (S3)
    • Data (DynamoDB, RDS)
    • Virtualisation/Containerisation (Docker)
    • Integrations (EventBridge, SQS, SNS, Step Functions, ECS)
    • Networking and cloud firewalls (AWS WAF, CloudFront)
  • Experience with modern engineering practices – branching strategies, testing - TDD, CI/CD, instrumentation;
  • Experience with scaling options and resource configuration;
  • Track record with a variety of architectural patterns, including microservices and event-driven platforms;
  • Experience applying integration technologies, including messaging middleware and modern API-driven approaches; and
  • Experience with metrics and monitoring e.g. Datadog or similar solutions beneficial; and
  • Experience within the Energy industry vertical or related field an advantage.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
