Murphy Operator Pty Ltd is a family-owned fishing company looking for deckhands for our 11 prawn trawlers based in Hervey Bay, QLD. Vessels go to sea for 5 week trips catching eastern king prawns off the southern-central QLD east coast. Crew get 7-12 days off between each trip as well as a 6 week break between September 20th to November 1st each year (annual fishing closure).

Crew are paid a percentage of the value of the trip's catch after fuel and carton costs are deducted from the value of the load. The percentage paid to the crew is based on their experience, ability and work ethic. Crew are contracted under a share fishing agreement and are paid under their own ABN. Gross Share Fishing payments for experienced crew generally range between $56,000.00 to $98,000.00 per annum.

Applicants are required to have a minimum 2 years sea time experience as a general purpose deckhand onboard prawn otter trawlers. Deckhand duties include: -

  • Sorting and processing catch into frozen 5kg cartons.
  • Keeping vessel clean and tidy.
  • General maintenance of vessel and fishing gear/nets.
  • Assisting skipper of vessel as required to keep vessel maintained and operational while at sea.

Applicants must be willing to commit to doing the full 5-week trip and not get seasick. Drug use is not acceptable on the vessels and will result in immediate termination of the contract. All crew are drug-tested prior to going to sea and when they return at the end of the trip.
