The Opportunity


As a Deputy Secretary, you will provide strategic leadership, management and policy advice to deliver the Australian Government's foreign, trade and investment and development policy objectives and shape the regional and international environment to advance Australia's interests.


Our vacancies have oversight of a number of divisions and posts with bilateral and regional responsibilities across various geographical areas, including the Pacific; development programs; policy; and trade and economic issues.

The intention would be to draw on the merit list should further SES Band 3 vacancies become available.


As a member of the DFAT Senior Executive, you will have a key role in the department's corporate governance, and in ensuring the Department is an accountable, ethical and resilient organisation.

You will help set the Department's strategic direction, priorities and resource allocation.


As a senior leader and manager, your performance will be judged by results and how you uphold APS and departmental values, including exemplary standards of integrity and professionalism.


In the context of an increasingly complex and volatile international environment, you will have exceptional leadership abilities, provide clear policy direction and strategies, as well as manage risks, to strengthen Australia's bilateral and regional relationships.

Strategic thinking, clear-sighted understanding of Australia's interests and a high level of conceptual and analytical skills will be essential attributes.


You will be required to represent and advocate Australia's strategic, security, economic and development interests in bilateral, regional and multilateral forums.

You will need strong communication and negotiation skills and be able to establish broad networks of people and organisations which have influence on issues of importance to Australia.

Positions can be expected to require a demanding international travel schedule.


You will engage in a collaborative and productive way with other Australian and state government agencies and build the connections between Australia's international engagement and the domestic prosperity agenda.

You will have good working relationships with Ministers, the Secretary, departmental colleagues, across the public service and with the private sector and NGOs.


Eligibility Requirements


You need to be an Australian citizen to apply, and you will need to hold, or be able to hold, a security clearance at or over a Negative Vetting Level 2 (NV2).
